Urgent!!! Need help with 12 bolt diff please!!!

I really need help quick please. I have to get this thing back together. Yesterday I blew the gov lock in my 12 bolt. So I went to the junkyard and pulled an open diff from a 12 bolt. Yes Im sure, the axles match up and I even had to pull the diff cover because I shot metal through my other. I didn't hurt my ring and pinion so I pulled the ring gear off my gov lock and swapped it to the open diff. When I try to put it in the axle. I cant get the drivers side shim in and the passenger is way loose. The problem appears to be in the ring and pinion as that is what is causing it to move over. Why would it be different? Is it the mounting in the ring gear from gov lock to open diff differences? I need to know what to do and quick. Thanks for any help.

Your junk yard open diff is the wrong ratio carrier. The mounting "flange" is in a different spot than the gov lock one. Remove the open carrier and stand both up side by side and you should see that the ring gear location is different. You need to get the correct carrier for the gear ratio you have.
