I'll have to give you the back ground but I think that a local shop may be trying to take advantage. I asked this shop to rebuild my 350 to a 383. We talked price and I felt good with the deal and put 1k down. Its been a couple weeks and I went in today to check up on progress and it should be done tomorrow. Looking at the engine I realized that it wasn't my block. He then showed me my block, heads, intake sitting on the floor. We had even had conversations about him repainting my block and he said, "yeah I'll probably repaint it black." Low and behold, a black block is in my rig. I remember seeing said block on his bench when I first dropped the truck off.

I'm wondering this:

Did I have a four bolt main with some 202 heads or something that he wanted and swapped me out what he had laying around?

How Do I know what kind of block and heads are in it now?

Ho do I know its actually a 383? I'm gonna have to get the stroke measured.

I'm going to pick it up tomorrow so your info is really appreciated.

In my shop i only rebuild the customers engine. Did you mention that you wanted YOUR engine back (not that he should have swapped it anyways without prior agreement)? I would definately make sure he documents EVERYTHING that was done as far as labor and a DETAILED list of parts used. You might want to let him know that if in the future you discover that the parts used were not what he said or you find out it wasn't a 383 that you will be contacting your lawyer. :deal:

I specified that I wanted MY engine rebuilt. I also remember the engine that is in my truck now sitting on one of his benches. So I question if he even did the work.

Yeah, I would think the only way you could "really" tell if he built it to a 383 is to tear it back down...

Look at your flex plate it should be externaly balanced.

Not trying to piss you off but you should have known what heads and block mains you took to have him build,or have had him look so you would have known. If I were leaving a 1k deposit there would be a list of parts that i left to go in the motor

I try to trust people. I also didn't think that he would do something like that. Ideas like this (switching blocks) never even cross my mind.....

first off trust no one . . . .

second get everything in writing .

3rd casting # will tell you block size not 2 or 4 bolt mains most of the time.

and you can get internal balenced 383 motors. so i wouldnt trust the balence plate on flex plate or notch cut out on balencer thing 100%.

but still being this far away from you and in my basement somthing smells funny and not in a good way.

last why didnt you just get a creat motor and drop it in your self. and then know how it all works. and its easy to do the motor swap on our old stuff.

and i am a auto mechanic and am said to say there is still a big pile of scum bags out there and not all are honest at all. not saying thay are all bad but the majority are good or great. but some bad ones can still play the good part and scam the hell out of ya.

i didn't do it myself because: I work 80 hours every week so I don't have time, the rebuild was only 1200. Plus new heads-200, new intake-200, pullin and puttin the motor in-400. I also don't have a cherry picker (I know its not expensive but....) I don't have a garage or anyplace to do major jobs.

Why don't you just ask him why he did not use your block? Be up front with the guy and he might have a good explanation. You can drop your oil pan and verify that it is a 4 bolt and you could measure stroke at the same time. That would be the easy way.

True but most $1200 strokers will be ext balanced
