I have the body off the truck and the frame scraped, scrubbed with a wire brush, and power washed. I have this do it yourself Kelly More rust sealing "powder-coat" paint that my buddy used who says it works real good. My question is, how critical do you think it is to do a coat of primer before I apply this undercoat layer? Also, the prep work I've done has taken a long ass time, but how much further should I consider going with sand paper before painting, or priming and painting?

I agree with RGV. A paint job is ALL in the prep work.
You want smooth bare metal and good primer before you even consider paint.
Or youll be doin it over someday.

If you have gone so far as to remove the body and have just the frame there id haul it to the sand blaster or soak it in tons of aircraft stripper then wire it down to bare metal spray it with epoxy primer then a polyurethane topcoat ... bullet proof !

Im doing the same thing only my body is on which is making it ten times harder but anyway i had the frame soda blasted and ive spent the last month when i have time grinding away at all the rust and other imperfections that remain .. i wish i just went body off actually but o well live and learn
