My steering pump shaft is chewed...

The threads on the inside of the shaft are non exisant due to rust...

Can I switch to the signaw style (ie: Keyway) without buying new brackets and crap??

In other words, can I switch from the press on style pulley pump, to the keyway style pulley pump, and just bolt it in??

I have no idea, but one thing you can do is go to the parts house and compare the two side-by-side and check the mounts.

The pump came off of an 89 suburban.

I am not sure if it has been replaced already or not, but it doesn't look like it.

I was on looking on summit, and they really only carry the signaw style steering pump.

They carry a GenII steering pump with a remote resevoir, but it is like 400+ dollars, and I don't want to get into anything like that if I don't have too...

I figured they would carry both styles (ie: press on, and the key way style), but I cannot seem to find a press on for a GM application. they have them for Furds, but that does me no good...

I had an issue in regards to this. My pump was a 74 style with a key way and a bolt on the front of it to hold the pulley (easy design). I went to the parts store and they told me that this is the older style pump and all they could sell me was either a newer style pump with the press on style pulley or a complete unit with the pump/reservoir already installed also with the press on style pulley, no bolt on style pulley. Id love to have the bolt on style but thats funny that you cant find the press on style pulley at a parts store and I couldn't find the bolt on style.

to answer your bracket question, yes they interchange. Go ahead and get the keyway style and put your brackets on there. I did the opposite swap and it worked no prob. You will have to pull the pulley off of your stock one (press style) just to remove the brackets then bolt them to the keyway pump, put the keyway pulley on, then bolt into the truck.

Since yours is from and 89 then the bolt on pulley pump WILL NOT work. The bolt on style pump is the early style with flare fitting lines and the bracket on your 89 WILL NOT bolt to that pump. Your 89 pump uses O-ring style lines and it a metric pump.

my 84 metric bbc brackets worked for the 79 non metric pump i have so i know for sure that the brackets will fit, did it 2 or 3 days ago, everything bolted up. I did however have to change the metric bolts on the pump to the standard ones, but your absolutely correct 4x4high, the o-ring fitting lines on the 89 will NOT work with the older style pumps, which is the reason i swithched the pump on my truck in the first place, just had a brain fart about the lines. 81 and newer uses the metric pump and o-ring pressure lines. go to a local parts place and get the pump, summit might carry it, but i doubt it.

Yeah maybe I'll just go to NAPA, or Farts Source... I may have to go to a dealership, but I really hope I don't have too.

I'll call around...

So I geuss the keyway style isn't available for 89, That kinda blows... But I geuss I can deal with it...

Now for another question! hahaha.
My lines going to, and from the steering pump are starting to go bad. I want to change them no matter what steering pump goes in the truck.
So would it be a good idea to go for the signaw style pump after all?? Or would I have to change the steering box aswell??

steering box and pump have the same fittings, youd have to change the box, pump, and lines for it to work.

Now it's been a while since I messed with mine ... I put the O-ring style stuff into my '74 when I converted the PU to hydroboost.

BUT, as I recall, the fittings (i.e. compression or O-ring) are decided by the fitting on the back, and NOT the pump proper... so you could, in theory, mix and match to make it all work.

Mine now has the new-style (O-ring) fittings, with a V-belt pulley, keyway style, I think... and all bolts into a '74.

Anyway, I think if you're willing to take the pump proper out of the reservoir, you can mix and match parts to make whatever fit ... might be challenging to get replacement parts down the line if you screw it up, but it's a thought.
