Ive pretty much decided to start with a cleaner K5 and swap parts off my 84,Ive called about and literally know of probably every K5 On C/L from here to Oregon. I have cash and ready to buy the right rig but why is it every one Im interested in and call about has no smog cert,no current regis and is still in billybobs name who`s in the slammer and the pink is lost. WTF, Am I asking to much to find a legit sale?

I feel your pain. I searched patiently (now, patience isn't one of my best virtues) for a few months. I lucked out when I found and bought a '90 K5 on AutoTrader half a decade ago. It used to be a government vehicle (specifically the border patrol) and it was smog exempt, meaning it wasn't required to have catalytic converters and any emissions components. I didn't know this and I assumed responsibility of facing penalties when getting it smog-tested. The smog fella butted heads with me for a good 15 minutes until the manager came back proving it was exempt according to the VIN.

I dunno why I'm bringing this up, might be totally unrelated to your story but I thought I'd share my experience.

Too bad my K5 is junk now.

If you don't mind driving to eastern Nevada. There is a nice clean stock 88 for sale local $3000. Don't know if will pass smog in Ca. May not have the AIR pump. Some NV trucks have them some don't.
