is a detroit for the 14ff a wear item? a local one came up for 250 shipped and its used, but how long do they last?

Yeah, detroits are pretty much either like new or blown up . Not like limited slips.

Make sure to get a pic first just to make sure the guy knows what he is selling you. Could very easily be a gov-lock and he doesn't know any better or he does and is going to rip you off.

yeah i requested a pic for sure. im pretty sure i can spot one with the four rod things. ill post it up here though, maybe yall can spot something i couldnt.

I bought a used one off of pirate, guy said it had been in a buggy for ~1000 miles. It looked great and works even better, and I paid $320 shipped.

That is definatly a 14 bolt detroit. i would buy it as soon as you can. like wrench said they are either new or blown up and obviosly its not blown up lol

Well, the teeth can (rarely) be rounded off on Detroits. Broken shafts and/or errant metal can hurt the locker. Otherwise, they pretty much last forever.

A closeup picture of the teeth on each side gear will tell you what you need to know, but its probably fine.

Didn't OatsK5 suffer that issue on his 14b locker at BB08?

Chicken or the egg.

He said he put the diff back together with no concern for the gear pattern, backlash or carrier bearing preload. When they took the diff apart, one carrier bearing was toast and missing lots of metal.

Did the carrier bearing metal kill the locker or vice versa? I'd bet on carrier bearing failure first but who knows?
