Would you guys buy a used engine from craigslist?

I need to get my ford running, and if I wait to build it the way I want, its gonna take forever, and I dont want the thing to sit and rot. I need it running so I can use it. I'll concentrate on the 347 later.

Some of them are from shops, some private party. I recently got burned from a yard on a 100K mile 302 that had over an 1/8th inch of copper in the pan. I pull a main and rod cap, and bearings were toast. Because of that I'm somewhat reluctant to try used again, but there are piles of them on CL now in the $300 range with far less miles than most anything from a yard.

Sucks that because of the stupid ford design, I cant do a compression test once the engine is pulled, since the starter bolts to the bellhousing, not the block.

I would choose one from a shop due to its rep being on the line. Though they will charge more because they know what they got. Private owners are on the up and up for the most part. Price will probably be lower but there is no incentive for honesty. See if you can hear it run. Those are hard to find though. Wrecking yards are good only if vehicle was in a wreck and that's why it was scrapped IMO.
