im looking to change ratios soon, i want to go cheapest route but i knoe some things arent good to go el cheapo on, anny thoughs, comments?

if you get used ones, check for wear such as broken or worn teeth. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

gears do develope a wear pattern, so it will make it difficult to set them up properly....or so I have been informed /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif

I would run used in the rear for off-road only (for rock crawling, not desert racing and the like) but not on the street. Front really doesn't matter much, so sure. But it's too hard to get a good setup when they are already worn in. Doubt you would ever match them again. We (well, Brian) had a heck of a time getting my front 4.56s resetup on my Detroit and I would hate to run that on the street in the rear...

ok cool so bad i dea to run used gears, at least for me anny way thanks alot,
dale

According to my customers that I ask, they would rather set up used gears than new ones. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

For us, the cheapest way to lower gears has ALWAYS been to change to 3/4 ton running gear.

you can run used gears if there decent. Not realy hard to set up. We dont really sell used gearsets. But think about it, usually the reason the gears were taken out was probablly because there was something wrong with them to begin with. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

I got a set of used gears one time, came with the amount of shims the last guy used. He only ran them for a bit but I used the same amount of shims in the diff I used and came out with the exact wear pattern. Made for a slick rebuild of the diff. I'm still using them today.

Or someone wanted to go lower? Or switched to a different axle housing to replace a bent one? Or several other possible reasons...

First I've heard of anyone preferring to set up used gears, but I suppose it's possible...

AHH I didnt realize he didnt want lower gears.

I never said I preferrd to set up used gears. There not that big of a deal, but I dont prefer it.

The "prefer to set up used gears" was directed at Tim's comment.

And the reasons I listed were examples of where you might find good used gears...

Hey, I have a great idea for a write up. I'll sell you a perfect set of 4.56 gears for a 14b, you install them and do a write up. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

that would be cool but i want to go higher and i need a carrier and i belive theres already a write up about it, but thanks anny way /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif
