Is it ok to put a ring and pinion that have already been used and broken in into a different axle? I've heard that the ring and pinion have a way of matching themselves to a housing and once they've been run in that housing you can't use them anywhere else. Or is it that once they've been run together as a unit they can't be seperated? I can't remember.

Also, can a ring and pinion that has been run in the rear axle be run in the front, or vice verse (if they're both 10 bolts of course)?

A used R&P can be safely used in another housing. It can be used front or rear. You just can't mix and match R&Ps. The ring and pinion gears are matched when they are made and can not be separated.

If you are doing it yourself, installation tolerances are different for used R&Ps versus new, though.

Yep, what Brian said. In randys ring and pinion install kits (www.ring-pinion.com) they mention used R&P, and that its usually difficult, if possible at all, to get a "perfect" pattern when setting up an axle with "used" gears.

Realize its not a simple matter of unbolting the gears and stuffing them into another axle though, they need set up.
