Using ATF instead of power steering fluid?

I did find this info when looking up "Dexron" ATF...don't know how much truth there is to it, but supposedly only Dexron II and Dexron III is recommended for power steering pumps...has anyone else heard or know about this? I've even seen a label on Dexron VI that states not for PS.

"DEXRON-VI was introduced in 2005. According to the DEXRON®-VI label[2], DEXRON®-VI replaces DEXRON®-III and DEXRON®-III-H in all applications except power steering and manual transmissions"

FYI...
I also read that the Dexron VI is NOT to be used in transfer cases that require Dexron III...

I run kubota super udt hydraulic fluid. Doesn't foam like power steering fluid when it gets hot. Expensive but works

Whats your thoughts?

I had a leaky PS pump once & my step dad suggested using hydrolic tractor fluid. I used it & it stopped the leak & the whinny noise. I never had to service the thing again! I sold it a year later.

So what kind of mixture is OK? Let's say the system is running ATF and gets 1/2 quart low and I top it off with PSF? If either is fine by itself, then it seems the question is whether or not they interact with each other. And if "topping off" the ATF in the sytem with PSF is OK, that implies than any combination is fine. Thoughts?

ive always used what was in there and under the cap.if its clean ps fluid i keep using that.all my chevys ive always ran atf.as for brake fluid in any system except the brakes,it will expand the seals and then dry them out and bust them way sooner than a stop leak.ive only used it in a car i didnt care about.in a tranny it will get ya a couple more months til rebuild.but it will need a full rebuild and not just seals.and flush the cooling lines and cooler so it wont get back into the new tranny or ps system.

What about hydroboost? Any difference for the brake booster between PSF and ATF?

Whatever you use, if it comes in a bottle with a small screw cap, DO NOT let that stupid little foil and paper seal in the cap fall into the PS pump!!

I did in my last truck. I fished for 5 minutes trying to find it, then waited for a while hoping it would float back up.

I wasn't where I could do any major work on it, like pulling the pump, and I had somewhere I had to be.

So, I cranked up and took off.
Worked fine. About 3 weeks later, I was turning a corner in town and lost all power steering.

My reflexes were quick enough that I was able to grab the wheel tighter and honk down on it and still make the turn.

A few seconds later, the power came back.

Fine for a few more days. Then, making another turn, it quit, and then came back just as I was cranking down hard. I nearly drove up on the curb.

I flushed the system two or three times, no luck.
In a car, it would be bad enough, with really big tires, it would be undrivable. But, I was running 33s, and I was strong enough to make the turns with no power, but when it came back on during the turn, it was nasty.

Finally I got fed up. Took it to the shop I was using, told them to replace the pump, steering sector, and all hoses.

They wanted to argue, said they could find the trouble cheaper than that.
No way, that truck had to roll, and I needed it reliable.

One of the mechanics asked if he could have the parts. His system needed work on his truck, and he was certain that he could make my stuff work.

Told him, sure. Rolled out that afternoon with all new hydraulics. Never had a minutes trouble again.

3 weeks later, I was at the shop for some minor thing, and the mechanic pointed to his truck. Perfect imprint of a telephone pole back to about the block.
Front bumper almost wrapped far enough around to lock it to the pole.

Said that flushing and reverse flushing did not seem to be enough........

Also said that after he got the frame straightened, all the parts replaced, and the truck repainted, it would not have one single piece of my old steering system on it.......

Its all the same stuff. Light weight hydraulic oil with some different additives and dyes. One night a hydraulic line blew on the freight elevator in my bakery, was able to repair the hose but needed 5 gallons of fluid at 2AM. Bought 2 cases of ATF at a 24hr gas station(don't ask what that cost me). Still working fine after 2 years

Why is it so hard to put the correct fluid in? I dont understand the desire to put ATF in the power steering pump when power steering fluid is cheaper then buying a large soda at burger king.

I guess if I was stuck somewhere and didn't have the correct fluid I wouldn't have a problem putting it in. But when you have the choice it just seems to me like its just a waste of time worrying about.

I know...I always use power steering fluid myself...

carrying extra supplies in the supply bin of the truck for one, this way you only have to carry trans fluid, it works in both, and I could have swore the last time I looked, the price was about the same for a pint power steering fluid as it was for a quart of trans fluid. Been ahile though, so not definate on that.

Either way, it's been working fine in every vehicles I have ever owned, never had any issues with it and will continue to use it in the future. :D

Unless I get some vehicle that takes a supposed special kind of fluid, like a lot of Hondas or crap...
