Looking for guidance.
Pulled the heads off of my 400, was planing on head gaskets only.
Found broken spring dampener (thank you bent) all the way down the line. When the motor was built the machine shop did the head work (including there springs and valve guide seals)
1) whats the most common cause of this (to soft?)?
2) are these heads still usable with this kind of wear?
3) should I send these out or can proper springs be setup without special equipment?
Looks like I would need a height micrometer and shim assortment to set up new springs
4) also looking for brand and design recommendations for springs and valve guide seals
Comp is recommending a dual spring or bee hive style?
Unfortunately, this is my DD and need to get this back up and running ASAP. Any and all advice, help or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Running a Comp roller cam w/110 LSA (so nothing crazy)

That's the spring dampener. You should be able to change springs without huge issues, but the person who is best to ask thee questions is @4X4HIGH

You should install the recommended springs for the comp cam you're using. Most people would just install the springs but to do it correctly you would need a height gage and also a spring pressure tester. Did you pull the heads or remove the springs with the heads still installed?

Heads are off.
Every spring I've pulled apart so far, the dampener is broken from the top.

Nice.
Is the wear on the edges (in the 1st pic) problematic?
Can I use the "stock"/current retainers? or do I need new/different ones for dual springs?
At this point I think I'm going to order springs and seals from Comp unless you have other suggestions?

It looks like the Comp dual springs have a dampener spring in them???:dunno:

The pic is too shadowy to tell but looks to be fine. I would like to see you use whatever springs AND retainers that Comp recommends for the cam. Beehive springs are far superior than a traditional spring also and those WILL require a different retainer.

Thank You!!:waytogo:

Heads were still useable. Machine shop was suprised I didn't brake an outer spring.
