From what I have rear you have to use what they call a crush rivet not the normal pop rivet I am use to using is this true?

Can any one school me in installing crush rivets correctly?

1Atony weather strip kit comes with 1 piece vent window seals, mine has 2 piece design so be sure you know which one you have first. Requires you taking it apart. Sent him a pm see if I can swap them out or what not.

Plan on blasting frame monday and painting it satin black. Figure if this far in Do it correctly 110% so everything is being replaced or refurbished.

Tips and tricks welcomed. So far it is not that bad just wish I had all my parts on but waiting now.

let me know how this goes, I need to do this and have been putting it off, I get pretty bad wind whistle

I've had to seal my vent windows on the '82 pickup shut "permanently"--the drivers side vent window frame has rotted and crumbled away,so I used ultra-black RTV to seal it shut, along with some duct tape to close the gap at the bottom front corner, that would let rain blow in and wind whistle it made was annoying..

--the passenger side isn't as bad,but the handle/lock is missing,so I used one of those vent window locks sold years ago I already had from living in a ghetto area off another truck,to prevent anyone from opening it..

Its tough finding a used door with a decent vent window here in boneyards..I saved the doors off my '77 GMC as "spares" in case my truck ever got hit,the windows in those are good, but there is rot along the bottoms of the doors...they are probably better than the ones on my pickup now are....

So far there not bad scale 1-10 with 10 being hardest I would say 3 to 3.5 parts are the big hold up!

When I did mine on the '86 a few years back I did the driver's side by removing the crush rivet/pivot pin and it was a pain getting it to crush right. Never came out the way I wanted so for the passenger side I drilled out the pop rivets instead and kept the "hinge" intact. I was still able to slip the new seal over the assembly and came out much better. (before painting)

Found LMC makes a vent window repair kit comes with screws, rivets and tool to smash rivet correctly for $11.00. Want to call and see if it comes with rivet in your pic that window pivots on on the kit.

Plan on sand blasting frames and painting satin black. Hoping to that tomorrow at work since I keep my blast cabinet there way more air and drier on it there, plus free storage!

sounds like you're tackling a big restore, you have a build thread going?

Not a bug restore just bunch of weather strip replacing 18 pcs then about 20 other odds and ends to go with vent windows and tailgate. Figured do it right one time.

Wish I had talent to do a build thread but no time or patience to do what alot of guys here do on there build. Not to mention truck is nothing special compared to most on here.

I rebuilt both of my side vent windows about 2 years ago, and they've done nothing but whistle while driving road speed... and leak rain water. The rubber seals and crush pins both came from LMC, and I've regretted it ever since. Next time I can find some time and an extra $650 in cash I'm replacing both side window assemblies with this...

That's pretty interesting! It's expensive, but not really that terrible when it comes w/ glass and all parts...

Brans87, hope it works out okay, definitely eager for a positive review. Everything I read on it pretty discouraging. I'm considering running a thin bead of silicone around them and just leaving them be. I'd miss being able to use them, but I won't miss the noise. At highway speeds, it's pretty bad.

Clicked on that link and it says that one piece window wont work on full vert k5s. Any idea why that would be?

So got both frames blasted, one painted sating black. Have to return seals since there one piece and mind are 2 piece, have new handles and rivets coming with seal that is attached to glass. Figured go all out or nothing!!! I will do my best to get them to seal right and if needed ask few wise men at work for a few tips.

Stay tuned for pics..

There semi finished to hard to close. The guy's at precision seals and there trying to help me out through pics i am sending. There a pain in the butt. I have the 2 piece and getting the new reviets to crush right is fun. I ordered a tool that is made by kentmore cause I like tools!
Do you have the 2 piece or 1 piece design seals? I can tell you you tube k5 vent window rebuild and watch a bunch of videos. there are some good ones but most leave little imporant things out but there still good.
if you want more info let me know!
