OK, Just did the rear main seal on my 400SBC. Putting it all back together now.

The service manual I have says for the rear main bearing cap I should be at 70 ft lbs for a 7/16" bolt. Sounds good to you guys????

Also, the oil pump bolt says 65 ft lbs. Sound right???

Thanks fellas
Hoby

You are getting your info from a service manual. If we can't trust those where else can you get better info?:confused:

Well, I didn't elaborate because of time constraints but I have a manual for a '72 truck with specs for a 350 sbc. Mine is an engine out of a '79 chevy and is a 400 sbc. I know they are just about the same motor but wanted verification. That's why I asked for verification in the title of the thread.:wink1:

Hey Hoby,

I show 65 Ft Lbs for the oil pump, 70 for 2 bolt mains and 65 for 4 bolt. I believe that most 400's are 2 bolt, so yeah your right.

Thanks Chris. That is all I was asking for.

BTW, I bought my '72 blazer from a guy in Ventura. When he bought it it was red and then painted it a sorta Royal Blue color. Lived near the harbor. I bought it about 4 years ago, don't remeber if you ever saw it up your way. Just thought I'd mention it.

Ohh I got ya now! Wasn't real clear why with the manual info you wanted others. Different books makes sense. Glad you got the info verified. More info on the 400 too!

MOre info on the 400sbc? Don't have a lot of info other than the prior owner was the one who put it in several years before I bought it. THe funny thing is the guy was a service manager at a local Ford dealership in Ventura but his passion were chevy blazers and muscle cars. Didn't get a lot of info on the engine specs but said he figures about 410 hp. It runs like a champ.

I torque ALL SBC main bearing bolts to 70 ft/lbs regardless of 2 or 4 bolt main. I also torque the oil pump bolt to 50 ft/lbs so as to not distort the rear bearing and or seal.
