Versatile rust solvents?

Can you put stuff like por15 on your paint? What would happen iof you did.. and if you had rust under your paint... scrape the paint and put the por15 on? Thanks.

Well thats kinda like sweeping dirt under the rug. You have to get at the rust and remove it ALL. Its the only way to stop it; cut it, grind it, polish it, whatever. Then you can put whatever on it. Where are we talking about here with this rust. If its out of sight, I'd go with the tougher bedliner.

Its under the paint in my tailgate, and surface rust on my fenders and stuff... does any company like autzone or pep girls sell paint for cars that you can apply yourselves? Theres this stuff that just turns rust into primer and you can paint over it, just thogut i mite use that

Well I know you don't want to hear, please don't get mad

. You need a repaint. I mean there are tons of ways to neutralize the rust but some body work would make it look good. If your tailpan is rusted then I'd clean that up and bedline it. The problem with fenders and tailgates is that they're rusting from the inside out. You should pull apart you tailgate and clean the bottom of the inside and put something on it to neutralize the rust. Cleaning the crap out of the bottom and undercoating would help you out too.

Cleaning the rust, some bondo, and a rattle can could do some good for ya at the moment

(I'm a major resto freak so I guess I'm always for the overdone methods and worrying too much, lol)

one thing I learned this summerwas that any rust you can see means a ton more under the paint you can't. I wish that there was something easy to put on that would kil th!!e rust, but what I found was that by the time the rust bubled through the paint, it was already through teh metal. I used a lot of bondo and spray paint and it looks better, but not great... all I can say for sure is rust sucks, man

Well it will look like crap... and POR15 is ment to be painted over or coated w/ a clear coat if it is gonna be in the sun. Basically I would sand down the area and remove almost, if not alll, the rust. Apply the metal ready spray to nuetralize the rust and prep it... then POR-15 it. Next comes the POR primer to cover it so you can paint over it. At this point if it isn't smooth, instead of Bondo try the POR15 puddy. This stuff is AWSOME!!!! It is like bondo except it doesn't shrink or crack. sand it all smooth... prime it again and apint.
