Quite correct!!.The marine VHF is for marine use only--if you are close enough to the water for the coast gaurd to hear you, they will come looking for you. You'd be better off with a regular CB,now that cell phones are all the rage, the CB channels in my area are practically silent. Those small "walkie-talkie's" they sell now work very well, some have a range of up to 7 miles, they are on an FM band instead of 27MGHZ like CB's,and are pretty reasonable,I saw a pair of midland ones on sale for 29 bucks that had a 7 mile range(I'm not sure if they require a licence or not). The other way to go is with a 2 meter ham radio,(144MGHZ),but you need a novice licence and have to follow all the "rules" to talk on it.How far do you need to talk??--a CB on the water or open terrain can go 50 miles, even without an illegal linear--.Another option is a single sideband CB,they have more range than a regular 40 channel CB,especially if it has "upper and lower" channel modifications(also illeagel, but often done) /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
