Do you think my dash is a viable product?

Ive recently noticed that the gauge bezels for the pre 1981 (78-80) are more "low profile" than the later ones. is this going to make a difference in your dash? or does the instrument clusters make up for this? I've been mixing all sorts of random junkyard parts together for my dash. The dash pads as well at the trim piece under the steering column also change in 81 and when mixing old and new parts together things dont line up right.
 
my 77 bezel is identical to the 87 I pulled out...

same with the fill piece under the column... hmmmmm...

One thing I've been a little torn on is whether I'm gonna do the 6 mounting holes on the production piece.. All along I've thought I would, and I more than likely will still do it.. But I began to wonder about any slight variations, truck to truck... There is room for a little error there, as the clips your screwing into can be jostled around the holes some..


ATTENTION ALL..... I'm looking for good pics of the dash area with the pad removed and the gauge assembly out... This is for details on what metal needs to be trimmed... it's not much, and I pretty much know.. But mine IS trimmed at this point...

so if your truck happens to be disassembled, I'd really, really appreciate some photos... Thanks guys...

Also, I am a tad behind, obviously the new year came and went, but I am hard at work getting this together...

and it is actually about 60/40 at this point.... :doah::o:doah::haha:

if you look at lmc truck you will see how the there were changes in the dash and the piece under the steering column in 1981. Its quite possible that with a whole dash like youre making is going to matter, but the changes are worth looking into. All I know is when I tried to match a 85 gauge bezel on my 82 cab with a pre 81 dash things didn't line up right. ???take it for what its worth???
 
Just read through this thread for the first time but have seen your dash before. I'm not exactly sure how well it would sell, but I know I would buy one.
Also, about how many man hours would be involved in each dash? I'd have no problem paying 300 or so for one of these puppies.

Trust me, I haven't forgotten about this... I guess you could say I had a major setback in the sense that I'm in the process of redoing the mold... Tho functional, the first mold had some issues that I wanted to correct for consistency...

Now that the weather has improved hopefully it'll speed along... I will keep you guys updated...

I'll put in my order for one blank primed gray, without any holes. take your time, no rush, I want it to be quality.:waytogo:
 
I just wanted to put an update to this...

Mainly because it's giving me a freakin headache... :mad:

What a nightmare project this is... Many hrs, many mods along the way, just to end up scrapping my first mold and starting on a fresh one... It was one thing to make mine, it's another to make a repeatable, perfect product.. I have 3 times the labor into this mold that I had on the dash, and it's far from 100%... :crazy:

I am pressing on and will git r dun! :haha: Tho it's definitely a major sidetrack considering how much labor I could throw at my actual truck right now.. The project/mod list is way long, and quite involved... :wink1:

Sheesh, I just realized I need to take a 3 hr drive to pick up mold materials next weekend too.... :doah:
 
Keep the faith brother! Time to lock the hubs, drop her in low gear and keep on pushin'!! I think everyone on this thread is behind you 100% and wants to see your success. Good Luck
 
Sure like it better than the factory one. will you sell it complete with the guages or just cut outs? Since you are talking molds, then I( assume it's plastic and not metal?

Looks tons better than the factory dash layout.

What year models will it fit?
