Vic Hickey 1969 K5 Baja Race Blazer recreation build

Cliff Coleman

Here is a photo of the reason Iam building this Blazer, Cliff Coleman was the driver for Vic Hickey, Here he is standing next to my 1969 Chevy C-10 truck he raced in the 1968 Baja 1000, I took this photo when he came to the 2008 Las Vegas Mint 400 to see his old truck on display, He was very happy to find out i own it and kept it 100% original 1969 race condition

I saw it at the Expo too. It was neat to stand so close to history. It looked like it had just come out of the desert. It was about the only K5 at the Expo, so that was nice, too. It's really great that baja1000 is building a replica to race.

Blazer

My recreation K5 Blazer is based on the 1969 K5 4X4 Blazer, The one at the Expo was a 2WD Blazer, My Blazer will be a lot different then the 2WD one:D

I killed a good 1969 Blazer

Here are some shots of what i have got done, I will start building the cage work Monday, I just bought 200 feet of 2" 120 wall DOM tube, I cut the back off the body today, After all the cage work is done i will mount fiberglass bad sides, doors, and front end, All parts will be super light and mounted with Duez fastners for quick replacement and repair, The leaf springs are custom made be Deaver Springs, They are 9 leaf with 15 inches travel, I will also heve Bypass shocke on each corner, Does any one need good bed sides, Doors, Fenders, Hood?

Cool! Keep them coming, Ron. Can't wait to see it finished.

Can I just add this completely useless comment that I'm envious of your garage full of old GM's?

I just got this extra shop, Its about 4500 square feet, I got it just for the race trucks, Iam getting ready to bring down 2 more Blazers, Amd me 1969 race truck and the 1969 Camaro, I will take photos of the entire shop when full, this build will be a lot of hard work but it will be worth it,Thanks Ron

Ron,

I will send you my address....feel free to send along those nice looking rear quarterpanels you just threw in your discard pile. :deal:

My build needs a clean set.

Today i finished cutting up the Body, I remover the Motor, Tranny and the transfercase, Then i removed the Body so i can start on the chassis, I will get the new 2" die for the tube bender so we can start bending the 200 feet of 2" 120 wall tube, I leave for Los Angeles tuesday to meet with sponcers and to pick up the new custom fiberglass body panels, When i get back we should be able to make some real good progress

You could have almost started with a truck cab, couldn't you?

No sarcasm, just curiosity.

Remember I'm from the rust belt...I cringe whenever I see someone cutting up a truck out west as here they practically do that themselves...

Can't wait to see more.

cab

This Blazer was in not that good of condition, Both rockers were rusted out and i need to replace on the drivers side a floor section, The bed sides looked good when i bought the Blazer but when i cut them off there was 3/4" of bondo on both sides and looking on the inside there was a lot of damage and weld repair and a ton of bondo, So this Blazer body was not that nice, But i got it for a good price
