Did a search of post about VIN's and didn't find info I could use....

I have previously swapped bodies on my 73 Blazer and kept the VIN #.

I've had it registered for many years with CA DMV, no problems.

Now going to a new insurance company, and they are questioning the VIN numbers validity. They have the EXACT VIN I have on my registration.....

I tried a few sites and it doesn't seem to decode the VIN.
The VIN is CKQ183F128517
Is this enough digits? What else do I check?

I don't have the same dash VIN. Do you think somehow the OLD BODY of the truck was reported?? I think it went to a scrap metal yard, but a buddy took it that I no longer have contact with.

HELP ! ! Sorry so many questions, just confused on what to do.

Thanks.

Your insurance company is probably questioning the validity because the VIN number is only 13 characters long (1972-1979 were only 13 characters) starting in 1980-present a VIN number is 17 characters long.

This exact thing happened to me on a old motorcycle once.

I did the same thing on my Suburban to crew cab swap. I have the titles and vins to both bodies, and put the Suburban vin on the crew cab due to the pre smog and antique tags. I removed all vins from the sub body and sold it for scrap steel, not as a junk car.

in 73 it would be on the door jamb area drivers door side.

and no vin in the dash yet for them. that was in the late 70's thay went to the dash.

at least on trucks its this way. i have a 77k30 with door jamb vin tag.

and lots of computer programs now adays dont like those short vin # from the old days.

 I was thinking the same thing , my 73,75 and 76 k5's were all tagged on the door jamb.

There is a process that you can go thru to get an assigned ID #. If a vehicle has more than one Vin then you have a Certified vin inspection completed. If you don't have paperwork for the cab you swapped on you might be required to post a bond to protect you in case anyone comes forward with that vin on the body saying it is theirs. If that happened the bond would be cashed in and they take that money but you get to keep the rig.

Removing or swapping vin plates is a serious crime in most states, and usually if caught will get you charged and someplaces require the vehicle to be crushed, Not something I want to see happen to my ride.

You can talk to DMV or highway patrol should be able to guide you in the right direction. or you can go the other route.

i agree; it they are too stupid to know this; move on

Thanks to ALL! ! Good info. As usual the brotherhood steps up on a wacky, convoluted question of desperation.
