Hi,

does anyone can confirm if the VIn of a 78 K5 is located in the engine bay? are the numbers stamped into the chassis somewhere? Or is it just a metal plate attached to the chassis/body?

thanks for your help!

Idk how you guys do it but over here in America most all of our vehicles will have the vin on the bottom of the driverside windshield. It's a little stamped out metal plate riveted into the dash panel. I wanna say that it is on the frame as well, but i can't recall atm.

Ok, thanks. you mention that it is riveted in the dash panel: where exactly?

mine is indeed a little metal plate attached to the body, when you stand in front of the car , on the left side...

I'll check if I can find any pictures.

78-79 was change over era for driver door jamb to dash vin location.

and driver side frame rail top side under seat there should be a part vin stamped in unless rust has made it go away .

There may also be a sticker in the glove box, which if it's still readable, and if the glovebox is original to the truck, may have the VIN.

You'll notice a lot of "if" and "may" in that sentence, but it might help. When I had my truck inspected, they wanted two copies of the VIN. Since the one on the door frame (jamb) matched the glove box, the inspector didn't have to climb under the truck, which made him happy :)
