I'll try to be as short and sweet as possible. A buddy of mine gave me an '87 K5 Blazer (good buddy huh?). Apparently he put it on a junk title. Originally he had two blazers he was going to make into one super blazer, but it got put on the back burner and long story short he gave me the 87. Its a beast. Everything runs and operates perfect. All lights, taillights, i know it'll pass smog, runs perfect. Basically nothing mechanically wrong with this vehicle. I went to DMV to register it and I guess there are multiple types of junk titles. The kind you can re-register and the kind you can't, and guess what, they say this one can't, although they have instructions on California DMV site on re-registering junked vehicles. I know this will pass any inspection they throw at it. Any ideas from members here? Is there a way to get issued new VINs for a vehicle? Looking forward to hearing anyone's thoughts or advice.

I can only give some suggestions.

1) Find a blown up K5 for dirt cheap/free with clean title, take all the good parts from the one given to you and put on clean titled truck

2) Re-title as "home made". Not sure how this flies in Cali.

3) Take it out of state and re-register it and then bring it back? Not something I would do, but depends on how bad you want that one street legal.

Otherwise, not so sure what you can do.

check the out of state ruels first. lots of them now will not do the junk / scrap titles and also if the state does you get a R-title for reconstruction . then lots of states will not let you do a R title vehicle in the state as the state will not reconize it.

you need a parts vehicle or do more searching on how to get one in your state . sucks but always check the titles on vehicles first before a ton of work .

All I can tell you is to be very careful about this. I had an issue with a VIN in CA a long time ago, and it turned out the vehicle was stolen (a long time prior to me getting it).

The cops show up at your home and place of work with their guns drawn to talk to you about it... :eek1:

I know for a fact this one isnt stolen. Its a long time friend who gave it to me. He just had no time for it anymore and he hated to see it just sit there and rot away. Not sure what I am going to do about it, but I do know I want this thing on the road really bad and as soon as possible.

Well, yeah, but don't forget you're named Jessie James.........:D

Don't know for sure, but you might have to go to the CHP for a certificate of inspection. There's one in Redding and Sacramento. I'm sure this is the article you read:
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/howto/htvr4.htm
Your problem may be that you don't have a bill of sale from a dismantler, or do you? I'd check with the CHP and see what they say.

And as a Chico State alumni ... GO WILDCATS !! Nothing better than those Chico girls this time of year. :woot:

Correct. i dont have a bill of sale from a dismantler. I got it from a buddy and all I know is it has a junk title. I am not 100% where he got it. Yes Yes, this time of year is great with the ladies around here.

And now that I think of it, I know he was the one who put the junk title on it because not many years ago, maybe 3 or so, it was registered and a daily driver for his wife.

If that truly is your problem, maybe you could talk to a salvage yard and see if you can sell it to them and then buy it back for a small fee.

Go to a different DMV, you'll be surprised what might/can happen. Not all DMV's play alike.

Or find someone on a higher food chain than your normal DMV worker and explain your situation and ask them. I have title issues, but apparently Arkansas DMV doesn't care, the old/new title is a letter off, knowing my chit I know the one digit off only says what plant it was built, but the DMV says the correct VIN doesn't even exist. So they titled it with the same vin as the old title, even though that's not what's on the vehicle.

if you are dealing with California DMV, you are better off taking it to another state and getting it titled there and then transferring it back to California....

bunch of nutcases at California DMV....ripped me off, lied, took my $350 and still didn't get the title.

So, I spoke with the DMV, and they say as of March 22, 2010 the vehicle was branded dismantled and prohibited from re-registration. So I guess its a parts vehicle only now. Any thoughts?

well, if that's what it is. :(
Sorry to hear that. Keep it for parts and find something the same year with no running gear.

Yea, it was free, use it as parts truck and find a good titled truck that might be rough and swap the good parts over.

That's my plan. Scoped out a few on Craigslist and waiting on some replies. Hoping for some good luck. Thanks again for everyone's input.

Probably ignorant of me, but if it was "dismantled", and can be used for parts, if you sell the tub, would the state not allow someone to have the VIN changed to a state-issued one?

I can only speak for this state, but if you buy a body (which is what the title goes with) from a wrecking yard, they remove the VIN upon sale. When you want to register the completed vehicle, you take it to the State Patrol, they inspect it, and a state-issued VIN is issued.

Knowing how ridiculous CA laws are in general, they probably have no provision for fixing this, however if they can't/won't issue a state VIN because it's "dismantled", then how can any of the other parts be sold/used?
