Vinces truck build

I’ve been a busy guy lately and haven’t got around to starting this thread. This is my sons truck that he has been on the back burner while I “finished” my build. Had a lot of ups and downs in life lately, and many things have got in the way, but now it’s time to start kickin names and taking..... yeah you get the point.

So here is the overall plan.

76 GMC 4x4 was a pile, but had a good chassis.
81 GMC is 2wd but the cab is good. I have one small spot to fix on the driver side floor, but other that that it’s pretty clean.
Also picked up an 80 something C10 parts truck with good sheet metal to scavenge needed body panels.

Taking the three and making one awesome 81 on 37s with a 350, TH400, a 205, and tons. So this is where we are with it as of now.

Here is the tear down of the 76.

This is where the crappy bodywork starts to show. When you push in the clutch the front corner of the cab would lift up.

Passenger side floor probably wouldn’t hold any weight. Really rotten... paint was holding it in place. Lol

Can corners were replaced at one point.

Cab off...

Time to tear it down to the bare frame!

Greasy.

I bet there was a little vibration.

Starting the cleanup!

Compared to the body the frame was in awesome shape. Wiring looks great as well!

Bed sides off. Picking through three full boxes to find the best bedsides.

All naked and cleaned up! Ready to pull the motor, trans, and t-case!
View attachment 301057
Motor came out really easy because the motor mounts weren’t bolted to the motor.

I was surprised to find a fairly fresh rebuild despite the fact that it leaked horribly bad. Too much blue and orange...

A true Wyoming build.

Hint: you can tell by the target used by somebodies kid as a coloring book.

This is going to be a sweet ride!

I don’t remember if I mentioned this has a 6” lift? I’m sure that it is closer to a 4” after the big sag, but it does have the “better” superlift rear spring packs.

Spent a few hours out int the garage last night. Stripped some stuff off the frame, and then Vince cleaned it up and sprayed the front section with some rust converter. While he was doing that I dug the 60 out of the parts pile, and started to gather what I need to get it put back together. I think I have everything I need except for the pinion seal? Thursday night I’ll drag his 205 in and see what it needs, and hopefully I’ll be able to stab the motor/trans/t-case in on Friday. If all of that works out I should have the cab on by the end of the weekend.

Wow I didn’t realize how far behind I was on this thread! Haha!

So a lot has happened in the past month, and I guess I should share the progress. First of all.... We aren’t quite where I was hoping to be with this, but I have 5 days off, and I don’t think I have any commitments other than this. So that should make for some great progress.

To begin with, I moved the 76 chassis into the other bay to make room for the next victim.

And then there was a few hours (4 to be exact) when I couldn’t take any pictures because I was stripping.... :eek1: stripping the 81 and getting the cab on the other frame alllllll byyyyyyy myyyyyyyself. This was one of those days when I was trying to figure out where I could move and be close to as many of my internet friends as possible. Lol but I learned a lot about the French language that day and I added a few of my own words to it.

Vince came out after school and soccer, to help for a couple hours. I can’t remember how it all played out, but somewhere in the midst of all of this I rolled the remains of the 81 out of the garage and then it rolled into the garage, and poked a hole in the tin. :angry1: That was actually before Vince got there. At this point I decided that we needed some kind of a payoff. I had Vince roll the 37s into the garage, and bolt them on while I dug his Dana 60 out of the parts pile.

Slight trimming will be necessary. :hack:

This was sad to see. This truck would have been totally 100% rust free if it wasn’t for the freakin mice/rats/whatever was living in it. The floor was soaked in piss which luckily hadn’t done too much damage yet. In all reality I should have replaced more metal, but I opted to do what absolutely needed to be done, and just be sure it was sealed up.

Then I started poking at the cab corners.... the critters made a mess of them too. If you look closely you can see the nest right above that plug.

I had to cut out a lot more than I wanted to. Cleaned out the nest and made a couple patches.

All welded up. I’ll have to seal it all up before we spray it.

Had Vince clean up the floor, spray a couple coats of rust converter, and the a couple coats of undercoating, and then a slathering of elastomeric roof coating. The white stuff seals things up great as long as you are putting carpet or something over it.

Then it was time to stuff the gears in the 60. First I had to rob them out of my crawlers rear axle. Since I robbed them a few years ago.

I actually did something intelligent when I stole these the first time. I used a different carrier so all I had to do was clean things up, loctite the bolts, change the pinion seal, and put it all together. BOOM! Perfect pattern, perfect backlash in no time at all! Haha!

Tomorrow I’ll have to get the rotors turned so I can put it all back together and get the 8 lug 44 out of the way.

So that’s pretty much where we are now. Vince has been doing a little more cleaning and painting, but with work, Vinces graduation, state soccer 6 hours from here, and Vinces GFs graduation, soccer banquets, and a few other events we haven’t had much time for this. I need to get the third parts truck hauled home to snag the doors and interior parts, and I scored a Chevy savana van with a 5.0 vortec, with the hope of being able to rob the accessory pulleys for this. Either way I’ll be able to use them on one of my rigs. Sooooo many useful parts, and I’ll haul the rest off to the scrap yard. Any input on the serpentine conversion would be great!

Brought home a parts truck. It was a 6.2 truck so it was very worthy of becoming a sacrifice. Don’t worry... I wore gloves the whole time. View attachment 307590View attachment 307591View attachment 307592
Then it was time to finish getting the 60 swapped over.

Working for a boat place I'm sure you able to sell that 6.2 as an anchor pretty easy eh?
