I have a 73 and thinking about putting in a vintage ac kit rather than rebuilding the stock 37 year old AC system. Any thoughts? Thanks

you don't have to use a 37 year old system, you can use a 27 year old :D
But seriously, the stock system is cheap, it works, why would you want to spend a fortune if you can make it work stock, and it will look better.
I have plenty of the stock stuff, I could sell you so cheap, just for my time to ship it to you.
And if you ever have problems, you can stop at any parts store and still find parts for it, just my 2 cents.

The stock stuff isn't that cheap. By the time you buy a new compressor, new evaporator and a new condensor plus all the other incidentals you've spent almost as much as a much less bulky aftermarket setup costs.

I've used systems from old air and vintage air and both work quite well with R134a.

You'll definitely want to do a rear A/C system as well, there is no way a single system will keep a big ol' 'burb cool on a 100 degree day. You may want to get on the phone with these companies and see if they can set you up with a system that has enough condensor area and compressor capacity to run a stock rear air system with one of there front systems or see if they make something to replace a factory rear air system.

Thanks for the reply that what I was thinking. I do need some of those parts and also would need to recharge.

Vintage air is the ticket versus replacing any of the entire stock a/c system, better controls, blowers etc. I have helped a friend install two different systems from vintage air, when something goes in my stock system I'm going vintage air.

When you installed these systems was it a replacement or a non AC to AC? If it was a replacement how was welding up the firewall? Thanks

Installing A/C on 74 K5(non a/c)

What do I need to do to install A/C in my 74 K5? If I bought the A/C out of a truck wirh A/C, what kind of modification do I have to do with the firewall? Aren't there A/C kits out there? I helped install an A/C kit on a 57 chevy and it used a honda A/c Pump...1/2 the size..A/C ducts under the dash...Need help, I live in Fresno, Ca. Gettin very hot soon...
