I am interested in collecting a few vintage license plates to make art stuff for the garage...does anybody have any from the early 1970's they want to barter with? :dunno:

Most of mine are older, but I do have a 1975 Indiana plate in fair shape. :dunno:

I have been focused on "year stamped" plates. My oldest is a 1933 Alberta plate in good shape.

technically.. in Joysey, you are required by law, to turn in your old plates... not sure when they actually started that law.... and not that most do I suppose... but I actually did turn in my last set..

and I'm no help, I have none... my boss on the other hand has dozens of newer trailer ones kicking around work, stacks... :haha:

In Alabama you used to just throw away your old one...or keep it and collect them.
Then, they changed to "the tag stays with the car" for a while.

Now we are back to "The tag goes with the owner (seller) and you put that old tag on your new or new used car...tag follows driver....

Npbody would want to collect these newer ones anyway.

I just sold a bunch. My oldest was a 1915 Nebraska plate. You got a number and went to the hardware store and bought a blank and whatever house numbers your tag called for. Got $250 for it from a guy in FL.

I have a few from the 70's that must have been on one of my dad's cars..

Here your supposed to return old plates to the RMV (by law),but its one of those laws most folks ignore, like the one that says its illegal to remove the tag off your mattress--or smoking weed..look in any junkyard here and chances are good you'll see 2 out of 3 boneyard vehicles still have the plates on them..

Not that many years ago the RMV decided to let us use a pair of old plates off an old vehicle on your antique ,as long as you dont mind paying them for the priveledge..this created a profitable way for guys at swap meets who collected old plates that had the year stamped on them to make a killing--plates that were worth maybe 5-10 bucks suddenly became highly desireable, and I've seen pairs sell for 100-300 bucks...sometime in the 70's here they started using stickers instead of stamping the year on the plates though, those are close to worthless, and thats what I have..

I was not happy to have to turn in my "green" plate I had since the 80's when I sold my Contour--MA now has a bunch of different plates,as many as 50 I think, when you count up all the various "vanity" plates--all are red letters on a white background, and you must run a front & rear plate--the "old" green lettered ones on white background were stopped somewhere in the late 80's I think, and you only need one on the rear, they still let you keep it provided its not faded or damaged so badly it cannot be read easily..
I had 3 or 4 of those ,now I have zero..:(..

I gotta say, I was looking for plates in the parts yards and didn't see any....what's up with that?

I have one you might not have seen before...

At least in Nebraska if the vehicle dies or is wrecked and if you want credit for the unused portion of the tax and registration fee for the year they will prorate it and refund the difference but you have to turn in the registration and plates to DMV.

I've noticed there hasn't been that many plates on junked vehicles like there used to be..the past few trips to the junkyards this year anyway..

Here you'll see many of the plates off junkers nailed up on the wall in the office where you pay for the parts--most of the yards have one from every state at least on display, and many from Canada & other countries......its possible they dont want any left on vehicles in the yard now, especially ones that may still have not "expired" and still have the sticker on them, its not unheard of for crooks to swipe them and use them on stolen vehicles--inspection stickers get peeled off junkers that aren't expired too--one place lost several good windshields when pocket butane torches were used to remove them by heating up the glass (crack!)..
...perhaps the RMV has made an effort to have plates turned in by salvage yards rather than just "forgetting" about them as in the past too?..
