voltage regulation issue...*check my summit order before I order it*

had the same thing happen to me. you've probably already fixed it but mine would do it like when i had it at higher rpms too. i checked everything. changed amps. changed wires everything. so worse came to worse and i changed alt.'s. took the one off my mom's trans am. it worked. both alternators were 8 years old (going by the date on rebuild). couldn't believe it worked. write me back and tell me if i'm right. thanks

really? so your amp would cut out and go into protection mode at higher rpm's?

Oh and btw guys I was sitting here feeling pissed that I can't seem to keep this truck together for more than a couple days when I looked over at the Summit magazine and thought to myself...why pay someone to do all this stuff? Summit has 100amp alternators for $116.
So I'm going to order it and put it on myself...it can't be that hard...unbolt the old one. Bolt the new one on. Tighten it down and hook up the wire.

yep did the exact same thing. almost bet the alternator will fix it. really aggravating huh. thought maybe it was just shifting so hard (automatic w/ shift kit) that it was losing ground, power, or somethin. had no idea. the alternator was the last choice.

anyone? I want to order it tonight and I wanted some suggestions first. Oh and whats with the "one wire" deal? Are all of ours single wire? I went and looked but I couldn't really tell for sure.

no, your stock alt is NOT "one wire". One wire alts are self energizing. You just hookup a cable from the alt, to the battery, and thats it. They don't always charge at idle though.

I just thought of something...are the alternators different for GenI small blocks to GenII small blocks?
Remember when they replaced my tranny they found out that I have a one piece rear main. Which didn't start until GenII's (or something like that) so we are sure that its not the original engine.
Just something I thought about.

Avery,

Nearly all the alternators are the same from the 70's through the 90's, although the newer ones with computers go up in the amperage. When mine was rebuilt, my buddy was going to move it up to a hundred amp version, but since I am probably pulling the serpentine setup from my Astro, I didn't see any point in doing it on mine yet. The alternator itself should be the same unless you buy one for a non-computer vehicle, and you have a computer vehicle. Just my two cents worth though.

DO NOT get a "one-wire" alternator. They are crap. They were designed for simple vehicles without complex electrical systems. Like tractors.
