Voltmeter hookup

Have a voltmeter that I want to install. It is one of those aftermarket Volt, Temp, Oil setups. The voltmeter has never been hooked up, and I just want to make sure I do it right. I now one is ground, but what do you recomend me hooking the positive to? Do I need to run a wire to the alternator?

I hooked mine up to the fuse block...
an ignition...switched fuse...so it's not on all the time.
