Ive been searching the net for a while, and cant find any SOLID answers. I'm contemplating a 97' 454, but I want to carb it and I cant find any difinitive answers on the proper intake to use, and there apparantly isnt one specifically for the vortec 7400's.

Also, I plan to use a 4 speed sm465. I know these 454's have a one piece rear main and use a different fly wheel, so i'm trying to find out if thats going to create any clutch/pressure plate or pilot bearing issues.:dunno:

I used a 2000 454, and just bought a run of the mill high rise oval port carb intake for it. Lost the EGR on mine personally but i dont need it around here. I had to port match it to the newer o-ring style gaskets to get maximum flow from intake to heads, as on mine the intake was smaller than the intake gasket. It wasnt a big deal, just an air grinder and some time.

On the tranny i have no idea, only experience i have with the 3+lows is throwing them in the trash.

I am putting a 96 short block in right now. Any large oval intake will fit. You won't use the bolts on top of the center of the ports (not drilled). It shouldn't cause any problems since intakes like victors for a 454 don't come with them either. I have a new style flywheel but the 87 clutch I ordered fit right on it and the depth is the same. Should be in this weekend . I am hoping it will gain a few ponies over my mostly stock 454 I am pulling. Mine did get a cam swap to the $39 cam you will find everywhere that is a mercury marine cam. I will tell you how it runs in a week or so.

Thanks guys, I read where people used an Edelbrock Performer, but there were no specifics beyond that.:thumb: And 80' 427, looking forward to the update.

I put a performer on mine and left the ports unmatched (it only has a 460 cfm carb) and I am going to try a tunnel ram later so I didn't get too wound up.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that Gen VI heads have coolant passages in different locations than previous Gen's. This isn't an issue?

Gen VIs will accept them without a problem if you use the genvi head gasket.
