Blazer79
1/2 ton status
Hello my fellow CK5ers.
I've been building my Blazer for over 10 years now. All thanks to the wisdom found in this site. So far I have my Blazer almost as I've been dreaming it since I replaced the first bolt.
I currently have a Mark IV 454 which was already tired when I swapped it for the original 350. It still has some good low end torque, but it's burning oil, and uphill, a stock jeep puts it into shame. At least it has no oil leaks (I put new gaskets when I installed it).
I've been slowly gathering all the necessary parts for a 489 stroker build, which has always been my dream. I bought another 454 with a set of 049 heads, I already have a comp cams K-kit (everything included and 210/218 duration), a set of crane roller rocker arms, a complete gasket set. I also have a polished dual plane manifold, an Edlebrock Quadrajet and a holley fuel pump currently running in the Blazer. I bought a AZSM EFI manifold and a set of Rochester 38# injectors, and was planning on setting up a Megasquirt EFI.
All I need is to buy the balanced kit I want from summit (Scat SCA-1-91505BI for $1,317.95) and about $200 on the machine work, and maybe later complete the Megasquirt setup with about $200 worth of EFI stuff. The problem is with the current economy, a toddler and another baby on the way, I've been trying to save for my kit for over a year and still haven't been able to afford it.
I'm being offered a Vortec 454 from a wrecked 1998 suburban with about 30,000 miles. It's complete with computer, harness, a bent pulley, 4L80E tranny (cracked case) and transfer (don't know which one is it) for about $800, maybe I can get him to lower it to $700.
Do you guys think this is a good deal? Should I put the Vortec in? Or are they overrated? Should I wait maybe another 6 months to a year (maybe even more) to complete the stroker? Has anyone performed this kind of swap to a newer EFI engine on an old Blazer? How hard was it?
Desktop Dyno says my stroker should have about 550 ft/lbs of torque and about 350hp. I researched for the Vortec's numbers, but found mixed ones. Most say about 290hp and 430 ft/lbs.
Any suggestions? Ideas? Comments.
Thanks.
