Got one that got toasted = no sensors or wiring harness. I was planning to run it on propane but it has no distributor....hmmmm... any ideas?

Thanks

Not sure what distributor you can you on 'pane, but I think a regular HEI will work. If not then a small block dizzy will work too.

There is no distributor on the engine, nor a hole for one. Vortec=distributorless ignition. All computer. What I'm wondering is how I can get some sparky for it. Maybe put the heads on an older non vortec block with a distrib?

Heads don't interchange with older big blocks . Different port layout , different bolt pattern .

What really sucks is the crank and rods won't fit older ones either . Its a new style tall deck block with wider pan rails .

The bellhousing works with older trannies , so it would bolt into older stuff , and the aftermarket is finally making different pistons and other goodies for it .

Well hm. it was in a like 92-98 or so body style 3/4 4x4 burb so I don't think it would be an 8.1.

I'll go take some pics.

Do they make a carbed intake for it? I know they do for the 5.7. Once the intake is changed, can a dizzy just be dropped in? Is there a drive gear or whatever on the cam?

here are some pics of a vortec 7.4 upper/lower intake and dizzy i have laying around for a future project. you cant see it in the pic but yes iirc the dizzy has a gear on it

That looks alot like the dizzy in my Vortec 350 . Which is about right , BB and SB always shared dizzy's . They even fit the 348/409 .

Thanks.

That looks like what I've got.

It's kinda for sale, too, BTW. If it doesn't sell and I get rich I'll build it someday. I scored some 49" Iroks for chump change and might be getting my hands on some rawkwells, my buddy just put 'pane on his rock buggy....you can see where this is going....maybe someday. :D

Definitely looks like a 350 distributor to me. Our boat has basically a Vortec 350 in it (96-2000 style truck vortec) and its that distributor.

the vortec 7.4 that came out of my '97 crewcab has exactly that dizzy. and intakes.

well turns out my pics suck.

Where's it go in the engine? Is it mechanical? I don't see on the burn hulk of junk i have where it goes.

Does your engine have individual coils for each spark plug with a short wire from the coil to the plug? If so then you have an 8.1 and they are distributorless BUT IIRC there is a "plug" that resides where a distributor would be to drive the oil pump since the oil pump is driven VIA a distributor/cam.

Just post a pic of your engine and we can help you easier.

look at the engine bay of my pic. it's at the back behind the intake where you can't see it...........and can bearly get your hands on it. tucked up close to the back of the intake. nuzzled between the nook of the firewall and block. if you follow the plug wires in my pic they group up and wrap around the back of the valve cover. they go straight into the dizzy around back of the head.

say if you lay on top of the engine and reach 1 hand around each side of the intake. you'll hit it dead center back.
