Vss on a TBI

No. But every one I have done without then added a VSS has run better. Most noticeable is idle and off idle and jerky driving like rock crawling. That is it's main controls in the program for these old ECMs. Does not need to be accurate but likes to know if it's moving or stopping...

It's a must have if you want TCC lockup in 700R4. Then it must also be accurate.

Chip would need to have Error Code 24 turned off. There are also some IAC adjustments to help a more stable idle.

Some guys don't even notice... but then again they thought a carb ran good too! :haha:

Have to agree with Mark. Seen enough people mention the "quirks" without it on TBI that I'd not mess around and try it without, unless its some super hard to surmount problem.

What are you dealing with rig-wise? There are various ways to run it, but the stock speedometer (cable drive setup) is probably the easiest to make work.

At some point i want to get rid of the 6.2 in my M1008 and go with a Tbi motor i have. I have the Motor, stock wiring harness and an inline fuel pump. I need to get a TBI fuel tank and run lines and install the motor. I plan on running it with the O2 sensor. I know I need to get a flex plate and a torque converter to replace the diesel one. on what side of the tbi is intake and return for the fuel lines ?

Both passenger side.

Depending on what you plan on doing with the rig, TBI tank/sender/pump is the smartest choice. Obviously a donor would make it all a lot easier, but a pickup donor is a bit more difficult to find.

For all I know (and I suspect I'm correct) the 1008 already has the correct speedometer for VSS, so then it's just a matter of finding a donor with the VSS buffer still attached, and swiping it. Since VSS was used from 1982 or so for many of the trucks (trucks with cruise got it), finding a donor should be simple. Somewhere I probably still have a buffer I grabbed for someone else...somewhere. lol

I am running a 241 that is not a vss model, I do need to replace the speedo its going bad and bouncing all over the place. I want to buy a tbi fuel tank new. when you said both passenger side what are you talking about? I was talking about the fuel fitting coming off the back of the tbi it self

Oh sorry, I thought you meant which side of the truck did the lines run down...smaller diameter is return, if you can tell at the TBI without the lines hooked up. I can't recall if you can.

If you are running a non-VSS t-case, and have to replace the speedometer anyway, just make sure you get one with the buffer still attached (the VSS buffer/eye is held on to the speedo by one small screw) out of a cruise control or TBI truck, and you'll be set in that regard.

If you wanted to get rid of the speedometer cable, then the cluster out of a 1990-1991 R/V, DRAC module out of the same vehicle, and the 1990+ NP241 VSS specific parts would allow you to do that. A fair bit of work JUST to get rid of the speedometer cable, but it makes correcting the speedometer for tire diameter or gear ratio changes a snap in the future. Just something to keep in mind, if you find yourself getting into this pretty deep and the parts fall in your lap. :)

If you convert to the later VSS 241 parts, you could eliminate the speedometer completely if you wanted, since the DRAC is what feeds the ECM.

AFAIK the cheapest way to run VSS on a setup like yours is just get the buffer setup from another truck. There isn't a cleaner way to do it either, unless of course you went whole hog and ran the 241 with VSS.
