my cousin has a 91 jimmy that he put an 87 tranny and t-case into. now the 91 truck has a wire for a vss, but the t-case from the 87 has a speedo cable. the question is.. can he put a vss in place of the speedo gear? will it just bolt in?

swap out the cable mechanism and gear off the shaft for the vss and reluctor ring. when i bought my suburban it didnt have a reluctor ring in it. only $8 part from the dealer.

Wow, that's pretty darn cheap! Assuming the '87 is a 208, will the 241 parts just swap over, or at least the VSS and reluctor?

id say almost 100% no... but the 241 that was in the truck originaly will bolt directly to the back of the new trans

well heres the problem.. he doesnt have the 241 case anymore. so what i need to know is, will the vss bolt directly in place of the speedo gear on the 208?

Your only issues I foresee are going to be if the reluctor ring from a 241 is retained the same way the speedometer gear is on a 208, and if the speedometer driven gear is held in with a threaded retainer of some sort, which happens to be the same threads as the VSS.

I know on at least the earlier automatic *transmissions* (2wd obviously) it wouldn't be possible without some fabrication, because the transmission housing isn't threaded, but I don't know what they did on the 208's to retain the speedometer driven gear.

on his 208, there is a plate thing with a 10mm bolt, similiar to how a distributor is held in an engine block

VSS on the later 205 and the S10's are threaded in, I would be surprised if the 241 was retained differently, I think all the VSS' for the most part are the same part #.

The 208 piece you are describing is not threaded. Maybe you can thread the housing though?
