ok so my gauge cluster does not have a VSS, can I get one from a newer cluster and add it to mine, or do i have to get a whole new cluster?
also how would i go about using aftermarket gauges with a VSS, just keep the factory one inline?

thanks

Is it the rig in your sig , an 85 ? Do you have the original gauge ?

The 80's rigs had mechanical speedos , but with a VSS type thingy in it . I think I have one laying around the garage .

Yep thats the one, I looked on the back and there is no VSS "box" unless it is more inside of the cluster. I can get a pic if that will help

AFAIK the speedo's are all setup for it, if you look at the back you'll see a rectangular slot next to the speedometer cable hookup, with a small hole next to it for the VSS "eye" to bolt to.

If you bolt a VSS buffer up to it (all one piece, the eye, the wiring, the buffer) you'll have VSS. Buffer needs 12V ignition, ground, and then the signal wire to pin A10 on most ECM's.

VSS buffers in GM cars are the same piece, (roughly same vintage RWD cars at least) so easy to find. They run off of the speedometer cable revolution, so it's not an inline piece that will play with aftermarket speedos.
