VW feedback!

iirc, colby has a diesel jetta. my next car will be a diesel golf. the pre '07 cars can get over 60 mpg if some of the emissions are bypassed. not sure what the latest gen cars are doing.

My wife and I just bought an '08 TDI sedan with 6 speed DSG, 60k. We really like it so far. She has been driving it to and from work for the past month. Her commute is mixed but probably 75% highway, 35 miles each way. She's averaging 40 mpg. Not to mention it's zippy, not FAST, but more than adequate. It handles good and is fun to drive. Older models had alot less hp so keep that in mind. They went from 100 to 140 hp and 180 tq to 240 tq either in '07 or '08. It's the cutest little diesel I've ever seen. I am 6' 3" and can stretch my legs out with the seat all the way back. The only thing that's annoying is how it takes off. The transmission can be jerky when accelerating from a stop. I think it has to do with how the DSG works.

That's always been my main question..the leg room. How's the fit from the driver's seat. I guy from work has a Golf and he's 6'3" like me but 150lbs lighter.

I've got an '02 Jetta TDI. It's all stock, 90 HP. At 75 MPH on the highway I get 46-47 MPH. Best I've gotten was 58 MPG drafting behind a friend's U-Haul truck. At 60 MPH on the HWY I get about 50 MPG, maybe a bit more. In mixed city/highway driving I typically average about 42 MPG. I've got 187,000 miles on it so far. I bought it with 156,000 miles on it.

I'm 6'2" and am comfortable in the driver's seat. I've driven it 19 hours non-stop, and wasn't any more uncomfortable in it than any other cars I've driven. As a passenger in the front seat I'm less comfortable because the glove box hangs down lower than the dash on the driver's side, but it's still fine. The back seat is worthless for any teenager or adult. It's definitely a car for young families if you plan to use the back seat for humans. :D

You can bump up the power on these for pretty cheap and not lose fuel economy, presuming you don't stick your foot into it more after modding. With 90 HP, it pulls up any grade just fine. It's got plenty of torque for the size/weight of the car.

Yeah mine too. I'm a big guy. In addition to being 6' 3" I also weigh 260. We had some friends that had a gas 2.5 Jetta so we tried their car first. Even though it's mainly my wife's car I knew I'd end up using it too and wanted to make sure I could fit. She was also interested in a jeep liberty but they have NO legroom. I think for tall guys small suvs are worse than small cars. Sitting for long periods without being able to straighten out my legs is bad. They have nice size trunks too. But Colby is right, the back seat will be useless for adults unless the people in front are very short! Of course nothing fits me like a glove the way my Suburban does! lol

My brother and my parents both just bought new VW TDI's, one is a Jetta the other is a Passat, both are already getting 45+ MPG. Neither is even anywhere near broke in yet, and will likely be well over 50 by the time they are. As for comfort, I can't speak for the Jetta, but the Passat has a ton of room (6'4" in back seat comfortably), and leg room up front is great. There are some quirky little things, but taking a bit of time to reprogram the computer settings seems to solve them.

I rode in a current model year (2012) Jetta once. Much nicer interior than mine, and more legroom - particularly the passenger front seat. Can't speak for the rear. I have done a 9 hour drive with 2 adults in the back seat, which wasn't so comfortable for me because I moved my seat forward a few inches. :D

On pirate guys are saying that the injection pumps are self destructing and its some insanely expensive repair that isn't covered under warranty because vw claims contaminated fuel. Problem is that these cars designed in Germany were designed to use German diesel that is better then ours. The other problem was the diesel particulate filters like to go out and they are something like $1600 that are also not covered under warranty. They went on to explain how one thing or another could cause the entire fuel system to need replaced to the tune of $15,000 which essentially totalled the car. You know how guys on pirate are but it seemed pretty consistent and they had links to tdi forums where other people were talking about. Myself personally, I have a gas jetta that I bought new in 08. I would buy another one despite mine having a couple problems. I just know that i better have an open line of credit when anything goes wrong with it now that its out of warranty! I have over 50k on mine now. The two problems were the cooling fans to the tune of $400 and the abs module at $1500. Both items were covered.

I think as far as reliability and tested longevity are concerned, it's hard to beat a VW TDI ALH engine. That's model years 99-2004, if I recall correctly. '05, '06 were PD engines, and are slightly less desirable than the ALH engine.

Right, my bad, the troubles had been for the like 2006.5 and up models. The older oners seem to be bullet proof.

Wife bought a 2011 jetta TDI last summer. We have about 15,000 miles on it as a comuter car. She tends to drive fast, and on a recent 500 mile trip, we averaged 46 mpg. Around town the milage is high 30's. We have had no problems, and VW serviced it at the 10,000 mile mark, as per VW. The car drives great(typical german car) and the power is impressive. It IS much faster than our 2007 tahoe. We are running the tiptronic transmission. Ours has everything minus the navigation, as suggested by the dealer. We have a family member that owns a 2010 jetta wagon TDI and they love the car, in fact they are wanting to sell their 2007 accord, because of the mechanical and paint issues. They are planning to buy a TDI golf as well. Our dealer was up front with some of the past issues, and suggested to purchase a warrenty that covers the WHOLE fuel system. Yes I know, many think that it was a up sell tactic, but as a mechanic for 18 years, it is cheap insurance over the course of 100,000 miles. My plan is too do NOTHING myself to the car for the first 100,000 miles, the dealer will do it all ( 1 quart of oil is $10.00 at the local NAPA) then if it is a good car, sell it and get another.

I bought a 98 VW Jetta TDI AHU rustbucket for $1200 a year and a half ago out of New York. It had 203,000 miles on it and at the time only got 35mpg.

I've put about $1100 in maintenence and repairs into it but now its a great little daily driver and gets 45-46mpg.

$50-60 to fill it up and it goes 600 miles!:waytogo:
