IT won't be for much. Just in case kinda thing. Lookin for a good one preferably Warn. I plan on moving it from my truck to my Blazer from time to time. So want to be able to move it too. I looked at the 12,000# powerplants. May end up with that but it weighs like 100#s and not lookin forward to having to lug that around. Ya think a 12,000 is a little much :dunno: ( I know too much is better than not enough :doah:)

Found this one. What do ya'll think?? worth it??

A winch should be rated for 1.5 times vehicle weight.

That is a 9000I and that's a good deal.

Right on. I may end up sending a message. Just not sure about buying someone elses stuff. May be a reason they're selling ya know??

:dunno:

I wouldn't use the Powerplant in a mobile type setup like you are describing. On top of being very heavy, they are very bulky at about 16.5" tall. I am planning to get one for my truck, mainly because I like the idea of onboard air and a heavy winch, but I have to actually get measurements to see if the HD will fit in my bumper, if not I may just go with the standard 9k Powerplant.

The powerplant is a cool idea; but as mentioned, its big, heavy and expensive.

Swapping winches sucks pretty bad IME, I've known some people that thought swapping their front winch to the rear was quicker/easier than letting me winch them back. Moving the heavy ass winch takes a while, reconnecting the electrical connections takes a while, etc.

Randy, this is all getting a bit past what you asked about. You'll see this answer come up in a ton of posts concerning winches and there is a reason for this.

Warn 8274. Find a used one, $500 or so and the thing will probably outlive you.

You'll hear people rave about how their cool MM, Superwinch, etc 12K winches make your wussy 8K Warn winches look weak, but watch them in person and you'll change your mind in a hurry.

The 8274 pulls WAY harder than other 8K winches, it should probably be rated for more than it is. On top of that, its one of the fastest winches ever made. Even when doubled up, its faster than many of the cheaper winches.

There's really no question about its reliability, the same 8274 winch design from the 50's/60's is still sold today. The same 8274 has been on the front of my truck since 1982 and it's had zero issues.

I think he would run into the same issue with portability with the 8274 though. My dad had an 8274 he bought used, put some control solenoids on it, and it worked for years. If it wouldn't pull you out, you probably weren't coming out with out a lot of work. If it wasn't for the onboard air situation, I would be picking one up as well. It is unbelievable how strong and fast those winches really are. I could still end up using one if I can't come up with the money for the Powerplant.

And again, the portability issue comes up. The 8274 weighs what, 80 lbs. or so? Most Warn planetary winches are in the 60-90 lb. range. Powerplant is more like 100 lbs.

If you're transporting the winch, its gonna be heavy and its gonna be a PITA.

But I think we're on the same page ;)

If you can get a good deal... go for it. (craiglist listing)

But, if you are going new... go as big as you can afford if you are doing any kind of mud running. When in mud... there is a LOT of suction under a heavy full size.

I have a 16.5 Warn on my Blazer.

i have a 8274 on a homemade receiver mount. it's one heavy SOB. it works great though, i can use it on my trailer, or any of my trucks. just remember to eat your wheaties before moving it.

I have a 9k Ramsey on my Blazer (1-ton, 40" tires, diesel) and have been happy with it. While I do not do pure mud-bogging most of the trail in the Midwest have a decent amount of mud holes to deal with. I have a brand new snatch block sitting in the tool box for going on 3 years now that has never been used....why? Because the 9k has never had an issue either pulling my rig or somebody else's just single lined.

Come play in MI... I will stall that 9k for you. :eek1:

Worst... we had 3 12k Warns to get out on K5. :eek1::eek1:

kinda y i went a lil overkill with my winch purchase...16,500lb superwinch...

That craigslist posting looks like a good deal. Make sure everything is included (cables, controller, etc.) that controller is $75 from warn. I have that same winch, XD9000i, on my truck and it was $950 brand new

Might as well save money and stay with a 9.5k winch then :D as a 12.5 isn't going to cut it either....

For the occasional use (on dry land!) I've been happy with my Ramsey REP 9.5e, I've paid $500 new.

Well... if each truck had a 9.5k I dont think it would have come out with out a 4th. :D:D

This is the reason I bought the biggest winch I could. Warn 16.5t
