I started working on my hood on Monday. It didn't go so well...

Here's what I'm starting with...

I am ashamed I let it go the 2+ years I've been driving it...

I started with this strip pad I bought from Roark Supply, who was a vendor here last year.

A side...

After about 30 minutes with the pad, it looked like this...the green is the reflection of the tree I parked under...

I then switched to a 60 grit sanding pad to get the "stain" and pitting out. I picked a good time to start, the metal was defoliating and I had to chase it quite a ways...

I wiped it all down with mineral spirits and then out came the Ryoken Green!

so, after about a hour and a half it looks like this.

There is a lot of pitting still left. This is just temporary until I can afford to have it blasted. I need to do some more reading on Pauls corrosion thread. There must be some kind of conversion coating or etch coat I can put on it...still learning, but finally starting.

Better just bedliner that whole truck. Or paint it with a roller. I think Hot Rod magazine did a car that way once upon a time.

Actually, that is my plan. Just need to fix the rust first. I got a set of color samples from Monstaliner today. I'm going to match it as close as I can...

Honestly, it's only the hood and roof that are crusty. The rest of it is in decent shape.

Ha! with our humidity I could take it back to bare metal and have a new patina in a week!

If Bedliner stopped rust I wouldn't see bedlinered rockers rusting through every day. It's just like paint, if you don't remove all of it from both sides and fully coat from both sides the evil brown just comes right back.

oh yes, I'm aware of that. The primer is temporary. I'm going to pick up some ospho (sp?) next payday and do the conversion coat to get all the pitting and stuff that's to small to see. Then do an epoxy primer. The bedliner (just the roof and hood) is to protect it in the future. Seems they catch the most abuse.

It'll be right when I do it. :waytogo:

Don't bedliner your whole truck. No matter what they say after a couple years they look like crap. The sheen goes away and the liner gets dull and chalked out. I have seen it with all the major brands. There is a rhino lined dodge here locally done all over in black, looks terrible now. I looked to buy a jeep done in line-x yellow a while back and it was terrible. Took one look and walked away, it ruined a nice jeep. The diy options are just as bad or worse. Don't put in all the effort to stop rust and then ruin your truck with bedliner.

The problem with most spray on bedliners is they are cheap crap. Rhinoliner, Herculiner, and the duplicolor stuff do not have UV resistant properties. I know several people who have had monstaliner and raptorliner on there vehicles for numerous years with absolutely zero fading.

@Big Ray, look at chassis saver from magnet paints as a base coat. Great stuff.

I did that...
$50 from tractor supply for ford blue tractor paint. Oil based paint... even added the hardener. I need to clean my truck as it seems i have some kind of dirt or something IN the paint now. id have to show a pic for you to see what I mean but anyway... rolled it on..

this is what i used..
1 gallon - https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/p...-implement-gloss-ford-blue-1-gal?cm_vc=-10005
hardener - think this was it https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/majic-catalyst-hardener-1-2-pint?cm_vc=-10005

Looks great for a roll on job! I just sprayed a truck with the majic tractor paint from tractor supply. Used the same catalyst you did. Took a couple days for it to really harden up but seems real tough now. I had to put a ton of thinner in it but once I figured out the mix it sprayed very well.

Thanks. I am planning on using their Monstaliner for a top coat. Got the color samples last week...

Jackass919 did his burb many years ago and it is holding up nice in army green. I think he told me his prep time was 2 weeks worth of work, that is probably magic to lasting as he removed almost everything and prepped it.

I just did the inside of my K5. Word of warning, the monstaliner is great stuff, but the included rollers tend to fall apart. I would strongly suggest buying some extra rollers.

Yeah, I saw that was a common complaint on the YouTube videos. I'll get about a 1/2 dozen roller handles from slowes so I'll always have one ready to go. Appreciate the backup!
