Warm up trouble - almost cuts out on me

I'm not sure if this will apply, but. When we got our 86 it did the same thing. I took it to my mech and he ended up changeing the vacum advance on the distributor. Hope this helps.

Well kids it seems that after all the CTS sensor didn't really fix it. Seems to happen MUCH less often but every third day or so it still bogs out at a light almost to the point of stalling. I think maybe the fuel pump or maybe even that baffle thing in the tank (that I seem to have read about somewhere on this site) might be screwing things up. Wish I could keep up with the posts here like I used to but can't - so can someone tell me what this baffle thing is inside the tank? Is it metal? How often or at what mileage do they typically fail? What are the symptoms?

I'm pulling all the plugs this weekend to further investigate and see if they will tell me something. So where is the vacuum advance on the distributer and how does one adjust it?

One last thing...you have to drop the tank to replace the in-tank fuel pump right? Anyone ever cut an access hole in their bed instead? Seems easy enough to cut a 10" x 10" hole and replace it back with hinges and a magnetic seal (like on a refrigerator)...

thanks K5ers...

Didn't think I could adjust that advance...

Yes the check engine light comes on "very" occationally. And it doesn't always happen when it bogs down. Only code I pulled was for a Lean mixure at the O2 sensor - but since I replaced the CTS and cleared the codes I've been code free and check-engine-light free as well. (If you read back a few threads you'll see I also replaced the O2 sensor, fuel pump, cap and rotor, egr switch, upper and lower air-box gaskets, CTS, geeze did I forget anything...)

As far as the tank - just don't want to deal with an explosive situation like that! I can't think of a good way to get all the gas out and fumes are so dangerous - suppose the fumes would still be there even if I did cut an access hole... I really want to know it's the fuel pump first though before I go and drop the tank.

thx

Haven't replaced the fuel pump - yet...

Can't seem to put a finger on the repeat performances, except that:

1) Seems to only happen on the initial warm up in the morning (i.e. I've only had one occation where it happened after sitting all day)
2) Only happens upon initial "launch" - in other words once she's going she doesn't stop, but it's getting her going that sometimes is the problem at a traffic light.
3) Doesn't happen after she's fully warmed up.

That's all I've got. I really need to have someone do a good scan, compression test, yada-yada-yada on it.

Well tonight I've fallen into the abyss of the "broken K5"

She died tonight on the way home from a meeting about 20 miles from my house - and on the freeway no less. turned over just fine but didn't even try to start. Feeling like she's not getting any gas. Had a statecop push me off the highway. Had her towed to my in-laws, luckly living only 5 miles from where she died. Tomorrow will be spent trying to find a decent shop in Scottsdale to have her fixed. Assuming the worst case is the fuel pump - and with 25 gallons in the tank and being that she's far from my house - I'm opting for a pro to fix her this time.

<font color=red>Hoping one of the Zonies will come up with a pointer to a decent and trusting shop in Scottsdale?</font color=red>

More details as I find out whats really wrong with her.
