I have a Warn 8074 on my truck and after a little use it will stop pulling. The seliniods will click like they are making contact only it won't pull, if I revears it it will work but I have to let it sit for a while, to cool off I guess. Is the motor toast? Also seems to struggle when it does work.

I have a buddy that has the same exact winch with the same exact problem. The guy at the 4x4 shop told him that he needs a new motor. I cant remember what they quoted him for a new motor.

My 8274 does it randomly with a brand new motor. I think the solenoids need to be opened & cleaned

How much was a brand new motor? Should I invest money into this winch, or buy a new one?

A guy that used to work for me said he replaced the motor on his with a ford starter motor. Said it is an exact match. This would probably be easier to find in a junkyard or maybe cheaper.

I think the motor my buddy was looking at cost $245 new. He said he'll probably just sell this winch and get a new one.

How long can you use your winch, mine will start acting up after 10 mins or so. The motor gets pretty warm, not sure how warm it should get. It is all sealed so I could see why it would get warm. Maybe its normal in the older winches. Can anyone thats been arould for a while that can verify this?

Warm, even hot is normal. Its just an electric motor w/o any real cooling. I forget what the 8074 can't do, is it no free spool or no power out? If its just no free spool I'd fix it. And if you have good connections and the solenoids are working its most likely the motor. A starter shop or e-bay can get you back to winching.

I've never run it very long or hard under load. The one time I did really need it for a long hard pull, I was burried so deep in snow (You couldn't even see the top of my 38.5" tire) the winch just stalled out. It didn't have the cahones to move my 6000lb truck and 1000000lbs of snow.

What about upgrading the motor size? If it had a little large motor it would have to work less to pull the same, right? Or would I just be putting myself in a better position to brake it? If have to replace something I would like to use this oppertunity to upgrade.
