So i have automatic hubs now but when i went to 2hi sometimes it seemed like it wanted 4 hi again, wheels stuck, so figured it was bummed hubs, had store credit with 4wheelparts bought the warns 9790's

Now i was installing one side when i noticed it had no lash (as the instructions say) so toch it off, now heres what i took off in the same order

reatiner clip
spacer
adjusting nut
lock ring

but i see in the chevy manual book that the retainer ring goes after the spacer, i had it the other way around, does this affect???

ok so going back to the instructions, it says to take the lock ring off and put everything back but i couldnt due to a dimple on the following nut so the only way was to not to put the spacer in, and that way i got a tiny bit of lash for the axle retainer clip to go in, in fact with the spacer in the clip wouldnt fit.

Did i hook it up right???

Have only done one wheel.

might try pushing the axle out towards the hub from the back side while trying to put lockring in....i swapped hubs on my 77 K5 and had to get my buddy to push the axles out to have enough room for the lockring to go in the groove

well the lock ring is in there, the spacer is the one that was left out, ye i pulled the shaft out the get thae smaller lock ring in im only wondering if there would be any trouble withouth that spacer

I just put Warn prem`s on my 84,it had the stock auto hubs. After removing the autos see on the axle shaft a circlip with a thrust washer behind it butted up against the outer bearing lock ring. Thats supposed to be removed so all you see is the wheel bearing outer lock ring. i put a light grease film on everything then slip in the new inner assembly and put the large outer retainer ring in place and if its like mine the smaller circlip cannot be used as you cannot possible pull the axle out far enough to install the clip, you should now have a small amount of slop as needed. One of the foot notes refers to early fords and some chevys not being able to use the axle clip. After you`ve poped in the large retainer clip for the inner assemble all thats left is to slip in the outer actuator end and install the 6 small allens to hold it in.

Yes, according to Warns provided instruction sheet if the axle groove is in so far (3/4" like mine)you cannot use the circlip then use nothing on the axle. The only retainer/clip used is the skinny round one thats about 3" across and fits directly inside the ID of the trucks hub flange in its groove, this holds in the larger warn assembly in place. Kinda schetchy as it allows the axle to move or float in and out about 1/2". They say it will not compromise longevity of anything.
I cant see any other option other than machining a circlip groove in the end of the outer axle about 1/4" in like normally Ive seen.
