Hi anyone/everyone I have a problem with my warn winch. It is a model 8274 an older one, approximately ten years or more. It just quit working on me so I decided since it was so old I would just replace the solenoids and wiring along with the cable. I ran into a problem when I ordered the solenoids from a reputable off road shop near my home that I trust they told me that they contacted warn and the type of solenoids on the winch they no longer make and I had to go with a newer style, problem being the newer style solenoids are very different than the old style as far as mounting and post location. Am I wasting my time fabricating new mounts for the solenoids and trying to rewire to the new style? Will I sacrifice reliability going this route? Am I better off just going with a new winch? Any help is greatly appreciated. Sorry its such a long post.

Did you get the new style contactors they use now or not? If you did, they are not really that hard to do. I can give you a wiring diagram on how to do it. If you didn't get them, just goto your local autoparts house and get yourself some HD solenoids for a mid-late 70's ford. They are basically the same thing as your original solenoids

Wow thanks that is a lot of help. I think the mid-late 70's ford solenoids sound like a better option at this point since im not the best mechanic in the world, but workin on it. Its just too bad I cant return the parts since they were special order. And maybe this is a stupid question but what do the solenoids go on on the ford? Thanks a bunch this info is invaluble to me, especially in such a timely manner.

Colton in Southern California about an hour from Big Bear, Johnson Valley and the beach. Sorry I should be more clear what are the solenoids for on the fords? Oregon? What part I love how green your state is, I havent been there in a while

Between Portland and Salem. Reason I asked about location is cause i'm about 30 minutes away from Colton Oregon LOL

Starter solenoids okay, now i feel stupid asking a question like that. Yeah I will have to go down and check em out. I have heard that is a good winch and worth fixing, what do you think??? I havent used it much yet since the blazer hasnt ran very much, but very soon it will be out of the shop with new driveshafts, u joints, gears, bearings, seals and lockers front and rear. Colton, Oregon that is too funny. I was in coos bay when i was younger fishin for some crabs and cod i believe we caught, its been a while. How is the weather up there?

Me personally, its the only winch I'll ever own. I use to work for warn for almost 10 yrs and know a thing about them. The 8274 is a very underrated winch.

Wow I guess I got pretty lucky with that question I am definitely talking to the right person. I believe it I havent heard anything bad about that winch, so since im talking to the Warn winch pro what else should I rebuild on that winch?

About the only thing that every goes bad on those are the control packs(solenoids),motor and brake. Best thing to do is rebuild your control pack, drag the line out and hook up to a tree, and dead weight pull yourself up to make sure everything is working.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Again thank you so much. Im from southern california and helpful nice people are a very rare commodity down here. I would really like to get out of this state when I can. So what do you wheel? Almost my bedtime I gotta be up for work before 5 tomorrow.

Well thanks again for all your help i wish there was somethin i could do for you. Im calling it a night but i will be on tomorrow and drop you a line. Thanks again, Matt

The solenoids are just starter solenoids

Jeff, i don't think a standard starter solenoid is the best option. I'm pretty sure he needs/should use continuos duty solenoids (they look just like a Ford starter solenoid but are built for continuos duty).

x2 they will not last and fail when you need them the most.

Believe it or not, that's all warn used until they switched to the new contactor style control packs.

Hmm I wonder what is best to do. I do have the solenoids from Warn and I cant return them, they were about 110 bucks for all four. The only problem is that the posts/terminals are top mount and the ones currently on the winch are front mount. So I would have to get creative with some sheet metal or something? You were talking about new contactor style control packs? Are you referring to the new type of control packs they sold me?

email me a picture of the ones you have from warn and a picture of the original ones you had on your winch.
