was there a special sealer used for top of windshield?(PIC\'S)

Does anyone know if there was a special sealer used at the top of the winshield,the area where the top sits on.
Here's a pic of the area I'm talking about.It goes in the drip rail area.

I'm sure there was a seal there (I won't go out and look at mine...its too cold and dark) but they never seal once you take the top off. Mine had a bunch of sillicon sealant around the whole windshield area.

mine had a seal there and about 3 tubes of caulking and it still leaked. i was gonna put a new seal but they cost like 36 dollars. LMC sella them and they attach to the roof. roof to windshield frame seal is how its listed. mine als oleaked around this 1/4 inch gap between the two bottom peaces of fiberglass. whenever you turned water would just pour out on you or the passenger.

Thanks guys but I didn't mean the rubber seal that's on the underside of the top.
In the pic. it's the area on the right hand side of the window frame,the actual drip rail.I'm doing the body and paint and have removed the factory applied,semi-flexable sealer that was in the drip rail edge.
I just woundered if anyone has replaced that factory applied sealant and if they have,what did they use.

I think I know what you mean. After 30 years the seal is (was) all cracked, correct? I don't know what the 'original' sealant was, but when doing the floor in a friends Scout we used bodyshop sealant in a few places. You can get it in big tubes that go into a caulking gun. It worked really well, I'd recommend cutting a very small hole in the tip to begin with. It was more fluid than we were prepared for and we made a bit of a mess, but it allows it to flow into cracks a bit more. That's probably what I'd use if I did mine and you can probably get it at any bodyshop supply house

ok sorry about the confusion. i agree with chris t. i would use that or some of that 50 year caulk applied carefully.

I used 3M Autobody Sealant in that area and in other areas around my tub. Any good quality, paintable body caulk should work well. Be sure to prime the bare metal first with an epoxy based or metal etch primer.

I'm redoing it in the same factory color.It's a light yellow.

Nope we used sanding disk's and wire wheels.I've found that the 3M "paint and rust" fiber wheel works the best.Actually it works REALLY well.
The truck is orig. from Arizona.The rockers are about the only rusted out area we've found so far.It's an easy fix.
The floor,rocker box's,window frame,bottom of the doors all seem o.k.
We've still got to strip thr drivers side so we'll see what we find over there.

Must have been the poor design on the way water drips through all the seams, combined with mud buildup in the door sills...

Have you thought of any way to improve this weakness?

Design flaw from Chevy I guess.
This is what I'm replaceing the inside rockers with.I'm not using the flimsy sheet metal replacements.

1/4" "C" channel.

They'll kinda be like a mini rock slider but that was not the intention. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Looks pretty stought.

Doesn't the same basic problem still exist only it'll take much longer to rust through your C channels?

What happens to the door sill skins under the doors?

Yup same problem will still exist.I figure it took 30 years to get that bad with the orig sheet metal,should take a tad longer to eat through the 1/4" steel.The bottom edge is covered with the outer rocker.Not sure wether I'll shave off that bottom edge of the "C" channel or not. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
