my truck started running hot last Sunday...i turned the heater on to help with the heat til i could get 2 a gas station...temp gauge was jumping from 200-260...had to drive it like that a few miles...when i got to gas station n popped radiator cap, it was bone dry and white smoke was coming out my exhaust...after sitting n letting it cool a while i filled up radiator n tried starting it a gain when water started running out the exhaust then the white smoke then i shut it off and towed it home...I'm assuming its a head gasket but i don't have a clue about internal engine workings :doah:...any suggestions as 2 what is wrong and how i might go about fixing it would be GREATLY appreciated...

Yup, blown head gasket or cracked head. If you're not familiar with working on an engine then I'd take it to a shop.

thats what i figured...i planned on a new motor b4 this happened so this may be my excuse for a crate motor...just not sure which route to go on it...350 or 383

well doubt i get a rotating assembly beings Ive never rebuilt an engine b4 and if i get a long block not sure that i feel like swapping stuff...leaning towards a complete turn key 350/383...depends on what price/power difference there is...

its a 1990 k5 originally 350tbi converted 2 carb...will probably put one in w/mechanical fuel pump in block

i guess so...just have to find a good shop locally...and they may not want to put an non-tbi motor in my truck for "emission" reasons...i can do the swap at home...just dont know if i want to start swappin old stuff on a new motor

Old stuff being; tins, all accessories on the front, starter, intake and carb w/ dist., flex plate or flywheel and clutch. Also a good time to get an ARP bolt kit for everything.

yea that stuff...its an auto so i guess flywheel...although its got a new starter, intake, carb, dist, air cleaner and power steering pump...probably be more finacially sensible to get the long block...what do most long blocks come with already???

Actually it's a Flexplate with an auto. No worries. Engine block with rotating assy. maybe a cam, and heads. And most importantly... a warranty.

.
If I were in your shoes with a messed up motor. I would go with a GM crate 350, and then swap over accessories. Bullet proof and with a warranty!

alright so let me ask yall this...my truck has a 400 with a mild cam and a set or iron heads...during warmup there is a small amount of moisture that comes out the tailpipes just like if the heater or ac was on...there is no milky colored oil or anything but the truck runs around 200 to 210..keep in mind it is a 400

i believe a little moisture is ok...200-210 seems a little high, but if it stays there then seems like it'll be ok...mine has anti-freeze coming out in a small stream while i'm trying to turn it over...
