I posted this in my build thread too but I need some opinions hence the crosspost

The backing plate the water pump bolts to has some serious pitting in it. Kristle is going to be induced on monday I need to figure this out.

My first thought was to fill the pits with jb weld or some similar material. I think it may be hard getting it leveled out enough to get the gasket to seal, second thought is too use the gasket and a small amount of rtv on the pitted surfaces. I know the real solution is to replace the backing plate, which I intend to do later but I would like to get this running before Monday

load it up with some ultra black and give it a shot...

That's a nasty one, but JB weld should fill the pits well enough.. If I had time I'd buy a new one... I just hate the thought that a little leak there causing a do-over....

I had that water pump and backing plate taking up space for the last two years and finally decided to toss it while cleaning up... it may actually be in the bottom my my trailer now that I think about it.

Well if its not too much trouble, if its at the bottom of a huge pile no worries.

I have to make a dump run soon and would find it while unloading. I will set it aside for you if I find it again.

Hijcked this post because of the great picture...Mine looks about as bad. Does anybody know where I can buy new water pump backing plate for a 6.2 ?

OK... getting ready to do this... Any idea where to get the rubber grommet that the oil filler tube? It the old one is fried, I'd hate to have to stop half way through the job and hunt one down.

OK.. the water pump backing plate saga continues. In the first picture in this thread it is clear that the water pump backing plate for a 6.2 liter diesel has thirteen holes where the backing plate bolts to the block and seven holes where bolts go in from the back and attach the pump. That's a total of 20 holes total. In the picture of the new backing plate I bought, there are only 19 holes. One of the holes for a bolt that attaches the pump to the plate is missing ! I had to finish this job before this weekend so I reused the old plate and just filled the corrosion pits with silicone gasket maker. No leaks so far..
