While deer hunting my water pump broke. The truck is about 30 miles from my apt. and I need to know if this is an easy fix and what all I need to do to replace it or should I just have a shop replace it. I have limited tools and limited know how. I drove about 6 miles before I knew it was busted because the serpintine belt came off and I lost power steering. Is there possible any damage that could of occured in those 6 miles with a busted water pump. I will appreciate any words of wisdom. thanks

Usually if you didn't overheat in the distance you will be ok. Changing the pump is pretty simple on the SBC. Just pull the fan, pulley, and then hoses and four bolts on the pump, and reverse it to put it back on. They are pretty simple for these trucks.

sweet. I guess I'll have it towed to my parking spot then.

you should be able to do the replacement where it is, a tow is just a waste of money... And you said it has a serpentine belt, the easy way to deal with gettin it back on is putting a wratchet or braker bar on the tenchener pully. Just make sure you get the belt on correctly, there should be a diagram on the shroud or under the hood!

I got the AAA 100 mile free towing the other day, so Im think im just gonna have them bring it to my place. Ive never done this before so it will probably take me awhile and I doubt they will let me fix it in their lot. I crashed my truck about a year ago and had to get a new hood, radiator support and shroud so I dont have the diagram anymore. Anyone know a place where I can get the diagram so I can put the belt back on? ahhh it seems like every year during the busiest part of the school year somethnig breaks or I crash my truck...awww life.

I think one of those haynes books might have a diagram, or maybe in an LMC catalog. I know if you buy a new belt it comes with a diagram so possible an auto parts store could print one out for ya.

since you have aaa, it makes sense, but otherwise, it wouldn't be worth the tow. when i do the water pump on an sbc (or 4.3L), i check the timing cover sealing against the block and crank. can't hurt to check while you're in there.
one word of warning, though. the water pump shares bolts with brakets and stuff, so remember which bolt goes where because they aren't all the same length, at least in my case.
