water temp gauge replace tranny temp gauge?

I looked up some old posts regarding this... and i'm wondering if I can use an electric water temp gauge for my tranny temp? I'm thinking the density of the fluid and whatnot wouldn't be that much of a temp difference that I would care. With the funds I have now for gauges i have to go with the cheapo kind and no cheapo brands make tranny temps, but I have no gauges at the moment except for speedo and fuel.. what are your thoughts?

If you can get the sensor threaded into the tranny pan, line, etc. then it should work fine. The sensor doesn't care what is being measured.
