Hi,
what about the weatherstrip parts LMC offers? I'm getting my hardtop repainted the next weeks and I still ned new weatherstrip for the top. Gmpartsdirect/gmpartscheap are quite expensive (compared to LMC)
Has anyone of you guys any experience with lmc/aftermarket weatherstrip?
Thanks

Flo

GM parts are thousands of times better.

I've had bad luck with LMC, but aftermarket parts from all makers that need to fit are many times inferior to GM in fit/finish, apparently it's the nature of the game.

The GM parts cost that much because they last a LONG time comparatively, and they are made by the manufacturer of the vehicle, not someone that takes a 20 year old part and tries to reverse engineer and produce it in Thailand to save money, so that it satisfies peoples quest for "bargains".

Seals, electrical parts, and sheetmetal, if available OEM, are worth every penny over aftermarket.

@Dyeager:
well, to be honest, I'm a big fan of gm parts, I had to resell/send back a lot of items because I was shocked how bad the quality was...
(I've original/nos: taillamps, bumpers, sliding side windows (!), grille, bezels, emblems ... ;-) + a lot of nos gm seals/weatherstrip)

=>I just checked the prices of the weatherstrip parts and I think I'll go gm, the price is quite OK, and I get the good feeling of redoing the K5 the best way that's possible ;-)

I've gotten seals from Rock Auto, JC Whitney and LMC and was satisfied with all of them.

The seals that were being replaced were dried out hard as rock junk so my baseline was pretty low.

i tryed getting weatherstripping for my truck and they told me there is none available.

Lazy/incompetent parts folks will tell you that. Anytime they can't give you a part number, they are lying. Unfortunately, based on the number of horrid parts counters out there, it's pretty obvious GM doesn't care a lot about their long term customers. (not to mention how much stuff they DO discontinue even before the vehicle is ten years old)

Also check out Classicparts.com, their quality on the weatherstrip is very good. IMHO much better than LMC's stuff.

Yep, classicparts is not bad, bought a couple of items there, quite good quality.

concerning the gm weatherstrip:
I checked several gm parts onlineshops and all the hardtop weatherstrip pieces were still available. prices are higher than lmc, but the difference is -except for the rear window weatherstrip- not as big as expected.

Yes, the rear window seal has been discontinued from GM for almost a decade...that was one of the seals that they had discontinued prior to 2001, meaning the trucks weren't even 10 years old but you couldn't get some parts. :(

If anyone finds that the aftermarket rear window seals have improved, I'd be interested in your thoughts on them. The LMC one I bought many years ago was designed completely wrong, and with poor materials to boot. I tried working with them at the time, even sent a piece of the OEM one as a sample, explaining how theirs were made wrong, however never heard back after that.

I believe that is the one....don't have anything to corroborate that with, but it's the one that clips into the hardtop, that the rear window rolls up into.

Factory is wider at the bottom than the top, and the clips that hold it to the top need to be made of spring steel. One from LMC was the same width at the base as the top, and the clips were made of mild steel, which didn't grip the top, so it falls down. Not only that, the "felt" covering that makes it slippery for the window rubbed off in your fingers.

Since it was so long ago, I have no idea if the quality improved, but I'd like to hear from others that have gotten the newer ones. I know what OEM looks like, and this was far from it.

well,
i found the weatherstrip we're talking about at gmpartscatalog dot com for about 82 $, but I do not know if it is still available though. it is not listed in gmpartsdirect & gmparscheap (.com). did you try classicindustries? they seem to have really good quality...
greetings

I will be ordering that one from Classic pretty soon, I will let you know on the fit and quality.

Did you try gmpartcatalog.com for an order of it? That's a good price IMO if it's an actual GM part.

I got one from classic parts/chevy duty about 2 years back and it is pretty nice, my old one was in 3 pieces. It sounds nicer then the LMC one, it stays in my top and the felt is still in nice shape, had to trim it a little on the ends to get it fitting right.

LMC sucks, I'm sending back every piece of rubber plus a few other things.

Who is the recommended source for the rear window seal in the topper?
