Weekend work: opening a can of worms

You never know what you might find when you start a project that you planned on doing. I always try to do my work when parts stores are still open because of this LOL This is all work on my '89 Suburban 1/2 ton 4X4.

I had planned on changing my trans fluid in my 700R4, and at least changing the PCV valve, and if I had time, doing a ball joint yesterday.

While I had the air cleaner off to get access to the PCV valve, I found the coil wire was arcing on the air cleaner base :doah:OK, no problem, get a set of wires, cap & roter later. On to the transmission. I had no clue how much fluid it would take to fill this back up, but it sure looked like it had a deep pan. I had picked up a filter & 6 quarts of Dex/Merc last weekend. My buddy & I pulled the pan after letting it drain, forever, in the wind, and after pulling the filter off, found bolts that were almost dropped all the way out of the valve body! Supposedly the previous owner (who didn't speak English...) was a transmission rebuilder :dunno:

While down below, I noticed the front driveshaft bolts were loose... so I pulled them, and added a small amount of loctite. Off to Autozone to get some supplies after filling the trans (took 5 quarts to bring it back to level, by the way). I was lucky that they had an Accel cap & rotor kit, because they didn't have any others in stock. They had plenty of wire kits, thankfully. The old wire kit had the cylinder numbers on them, which I thought was a nice touch.

So, my buddy & I are under the hood pulling the wires off the plugs, and pulled the cap off. He noticed the vacuum line coming off the intake looked bad that was near the coil. D'oh! Lucky for me, I had some vacuum line in my toolbox, since I'm pretty sure it was later than any parts store was open at that point. Now, the plug wires were routed in an interesting way. Between the Cruise bracket & throttle cable bracket? No way anyone would spend the time to do that upon replacement; and they also had some factory looking tubing around them in certain places. I'm guessing it was all original (now with 160K miles!).

Thankfully, after a moment of double checking, the engine fired right up. Runs a lot smoother now too, I had already replaced the plugs & changed the oil a while ago.

Looking forward to see if my Cruise control works now! That would be awesome, since we are heading to Yosemite next weekend.

PS do your neighbors laugh at you when you are completley under the hood? :haha:
 
Oh yeah, I never got to the ball joint. It was 7:30 by the time we were done, and we were hungry! Perhaps another weekend when I have a full day to get to it. I'm concerned about getting the spindle off; I remember spending a few hours with a sledgehammer on my old Grand Wagoneer to get it off...
