I have a 99 durango with a 5.9.. Runs great! (usually) A few weeks ago I was towing a trailer. While I had the trailer on, the truck would die at just about every stop sign. Unhooked the trailer and it ran great again. I drove the crap out of it trying to get it to do it again and nothing. Then, I took it out in the desert. I had it in 4 low for a while in soft sand. The entire time I had it in the sand it was doing the same thing. Come to a stop and it dies...

Under normal driving conditions it has zero issues. Ive tried driving it hard to casue the issue again and cant. I have tried full throttle to full brake and runs fine.. 4 low on the pavement... Fine. The engine light has never shown any codes, and I had the code reader plugged in to it... no codes.

Im stumped. Any thoughts?

just a cheap and easy idea, clean the throttle plate, dirty enough one can do what your talking about. usually though its at every stop no matter what driving conditions. but its easy thing to try. i always try to do the low cost stuff first.

Im all about low cost! Plus it cant hurt. I will give it a try! Thanks.

Does it have a mass air flow sensor near the air box? If so, get some electronics cleaner and clean it up. Not sure about Dodge's, but in the Fords I've messed with a dirty MAF can cause odd problems.

im not sure that truck has a maf at all, i would have suggested to clean that too, but i dont recall one under the hood on those.

I will check on the MAF too.. And the Chevy thing, I would usually agree with you, but I got this for next to nothing and its a fun truck. I dont think I could find a comperable chevy for the price. I paid under three grand for it. Its a 99 with a 5.9 front and rear A/c all leather thats in great shape, all the bells and whistles of its time. Its a good little truck. Crap gas milage is my only complaint. But, it doesnt get driven much.

it seems like ppl either love those dodges or hate them. my boss has one and he has had very few issues with the thing. his is a pretty good truck.

Nope... Well, not that I know of anyway. cleaned everything I could clean and serviced it. Havent been able to duplicate the problem again yet. Im taking it camping in two weeks and will be towing my trailer. So, we will see.

I think I found my issue.... Today I was servicing it and when I went to check on the air filter I found that it was a lot cleaner that it should be. I have spent a lot of time on dirt roads lately and figured it should have been pretty dusty. So, I started looking and found that the air inlet tube had two grease rags stuck in it! The truck was running fine as said in the first post, but now... Wow! Its amazing how big of a difference a little air makes :doah:... My onboard computer went from 13 - 14 mpg to 23 -24! And the funny part is that the previous owner sold it because of the milage! :D

So, I am towing my trailer to the mountains this weekend... I have a feeling I will be seeing a huge difference.
