on my 1978 truck , I have this weird noise I am trying to figure out.
While the truck is running it sounds like the noise is coming from the oil pan/flywheel area. like a clanking but not consistant, plus it kinda has a squeek to it. the noise goes in and out.
I Pulled the converter cover, the bolts are tight going to the flywheel.
anyways , anyone have any ideas ?

Did you fire it back up after you took the converter cover off? also check to see if the nose of the starter is rubbing on the flexplate

Busted flexplate. Been there done, that sucks to change. Easist way is to pull the motor up and off the mounts, then move the engine forward enough to get your hands and a wrench in there.

is it your hot air valve flapper type thingy on your exhaust that heats up the air for the intake rattling? moreso on passenger or driver side?

actually I checked for a busted flexplate, but i could not tell. I did try to wiggle it and it didnt move. I did not start it afterwards though, i guess i should.
the exhaust flapper is on the passenger side and is not hooked up.
That might be making the noise, not sure.
The starter could be rubbing, I will check that also tomorrow.

Busted flywheel is pretty common, and the last one I dealt with didn't show any damage or movement. When I pulled the tranny to replace it, it took one good swing with a hammer to drive the center of the flywheel out. Mine would be fine at different speeds, and would come and go. Just something to consider, but it may be worth it to pull the TC back a little and see if the center is damaged at all.

Thanks guys.

I have had a couple flywheels bust on me in the past in a different vehicle. The first time it happened I started hearing a noise but i cant remember how it went . then i got on the highway and all of a sudden I lost momentum and had to pull over becouse the actual center busted out. The second time ir happened I started hearing a clicking sound.

This time it sounds as if its kinda a clanking sound that sounds steady at times then when I put it in drive or back to reverse the sound kinda goes in and out. and sometimes there is a sqeaky sound to it. Well it will have to wait till this weekend, too many things to do in the house plus its raining outside :(

I can only wish it was only raining outside. I have seen and had several happen, one that failed on the freeway, and the one on my Astro actually stayed together until I could get my other car on the road. That one however took the pump on the 700r4 with it. Every single one had a slightly different noise to it. And the Astro would come and go when I went into gear.
