weird true story

Ya know ...I think it is a shame....

When I was a kid, many years ago, I remember my Mom taking me up to a police officer and telling me if I ever needed help, to go to an officer.
Where along the line did they go from protecting us to being the ones we need protecting from?
They did'nt....
Television and the media has blown every incident out of the water for ratings and dollars. Take for instance when a plane crashes...for the next month, there is news on tv and radio of every plane across the US that crashes, they make it look like every other one is falling out of the sky when it is approximately 1%.
This Columbine thing, I am sorry it had to happen, my condolences to those involved, but since then every incident of gunplay is splattered across the nation. We never used to hear about it...
Same thing for the L.E.O's....One does something wrong...well now they are all wrong...Bull****!
You talk bad about them now, but what you gonna say when one pulls you out of a burning vehicle after some drunk runs you over? Or one keeps you from getting mugged? Or car jacked?
Look at the emblems on the car...."to serve and protect"...give em a break....get to know a cop...you will learn what a true friend really is....

OK Goose. You don’t like bitchin’ Here’s a news flash!! I earned the right to bitch as long and as hard as I want. I still set off the metal detector at LAX when I go through and it ain’t because of my belt! Don’t teach your Grandmother to suck eggs. You can always head to Cuba with Elian. No bitchin’ there a “Happy Workers Paradise!”
So get used to it or leave!
As far as Freedom in jeopardy? It’s in jeopardy every time a politician wants to legislate the morality of a small group on the rest of us and gives Law Enforcement units more to do instead of less. Your analysis would have an officer in every house and every car enforcing the myriad of unrealistic laws on the books now! And if you were punished unjustly for the crime that you are accused of, that’s OK because you probably did something else wrong! And people wonder why it’s an us vs. them mentality! You break the law every day Goose. Wonder if you knew that or even cared?
When the environmentalists get laws passed that restrict 4 Wheeling on public land, and they will, will you be enforcing them?
I know lots of Pennsylvania State Troopers, how is not important, they are now being stationed at the toll booths on the Pa. Turnpike to look in your vehicle for seat belt enforcement. You want to hear bitchin’! You should hear these guys over a beer! They realize that they are a resource for true traffic and law enforcement that is being squandered over some politicians whim! So how do you change it. Simple. Bitch and vote! So off your butt and change it. I am, you should try! That’s assuming you WANT to change it. Maybe your happy being told what to do. Fine, there’s plenty of room for followers! Maybe you’re a natural but at least your thinkin’ about the word “freedom”
And now back to analytical thinking about some of the mechanical problems presented here! Thanks for the time.

Similar story to share... Took the opportunity 2 Sundays
ago to head out to the makeshift range. Here in Idaho
we're still pretty free that way. On the way, I met up
with "Mr. City". I was speeding and knew it and when he
passed the car in back of me he had his sights set on
me... Officer came up and .44 Mag was on the seat (no CC
permit). He got pretty nervous, asked if it was loaded
(no). Had me get out of the truck, step to the rear. Put
me through the 20 questions etc. He asked if I minded if
he checked the weapon. I told him I did not, was this a
mistake? Not in my case, he checked the weapon, opened the
glove box and center console, came back and told me to
drive slower and have a good day. Even though I had a
ticket or 2 on my record.

I can understand why an officer would be concerned with
weapons in the vehicle. I furthermore agree with the
poster above that stated 'Nothing gives a cop more PC than
refusing to let them search your vehicle'. They WILL find
a reason if you decline, furthermore, I'd likely have been
out another $75 for a ticket.

The officer in question was very courteous and acted
appropriately for the situation (IMHO). Could things have
turned out differently? Absolutely. Will I do something
different next time? Probably not. I hope I'm not be totally naive here but I guess I still follow the old theory
that officers are out there to protect the public. Obviously, some here disagree. Not wanting to argue with anyone, just sharing my related story.

BTW: I must say that cops look a whole lot harder at me in
the new Jimmy on 33" tires w/tinted windows than they do
even when I'm driving the Firebird. I don't like that
much! :-(

OK I’ve been pretty tough on you guys and you’ve responded well. Keep doing it. Never give up!
To Eagle. Helo driver eh!! Then your certifiable just like me! I still think that fixed wing stuff is for weenies! BUT your absolutely right. We only see the bad stuff on the news or the picture of Officer Friendly bitching after his union meeting about how little he gets paid. Pictures and sound bites sure to endear them to us who pay the bill! Get to know them. Yes, they are human and usually just like you!
I’m lucky, half my cousins are on the Pittsburgh Police Force, Many of them high ranking by now so I know police. Lots of em’. Some good some not so good, but I know em’. Once of my gunners was the son of the Chief of Maryland State Police. I went down to his place after we all got home and had one hell of a party. He took all our keys BEFORE the drinking began. Good man.
Yes, Officer Murphy was the beat cop in my neighborhood when I was growing up. When I tried to lift a car, Murphy caught me and beat me silly. He also let me go and said don’t do it again. Would that happen today? No way.
We all need to know our police better,
But they need to know us better as well!
How often do they approach a car with those incredibly intimidating sunglasses on? How many of them have the wonderfully tailored shirts to show off those bulging biceps? Lose em’ you guys! You just irritate people and make them want you to go away. How many stand up in the watch meeting and tell the watch Commander that they need to get out of their armored chariot’s and walk the beat with the people? I was driving through Phoenixville, Pa last week and I saw a beat cop. A beat cop!!! I was so amazed that I pulled over and talked with him for a minute. They are starting a new program to put the cops back on the streets! The guy was actually my age and had given up his desk job to hit the street! When was the last time your city had a beat cop. How bout cops on horseback for crowd control? There is no more effective control than a well trained police horse and rider and the people love ‘em and yet our City Fathers (read politicians here) have all but eliminated horse and rider patrols. So what is it you’re doing to get close to the ones you protect and serve and vice versa?
To Rem 7600, this may sound like a contradiction to my previous postings but you did absolutely the correct thing. The Officer had a specific search in mind and was searching BECAUSE he saw imminent danger on the front seat of your car. IN that case, BRAVO to you and the Officer. The situation was kept under control and everyone was satisfied. Whether you should have gotten a ticket or not I leave to you and the officer!
Well, enough of that for now.

SnakeEyes: I cannot complain anymore about what you wish to accomplish, just about how you started it all. If people don't think the laws are fair the right think to do is talk to your elected officials. The wrong thing is to gripe to police when they enforce those laws. Enforcement is part of our jobs. There are problems with public relations. I think a lot of this comes from the fact that the general public is intimidated? by uniformed officers and don't want to talk to them unless they have a serious problem. We have a bicycle patrol that some of the officers do around here. That helps some with meeting and talking to the public, but it still isn't enough. The general opion seems to be that police are after everybody. Just listen to the comments the next time an officer walks into some place. I guarantee somebody will say something like "Look out Bob, they're here to get you". That's the societal opinion, which carries over to any dealings you have with police. Your kids learn this at an early age and the cycle continues. One of the few bright spots I've seen in changing this are DARE programs. I could go on, but everybody would get a better understanding of what I'm saying by getting to know one of your local officers.

BTW: The flatop haircut and sunglasses serve a purpose. They can be intimidating, but image means a lot when somebody is thinking about cracking your skull and decide not too after sizing you up. I always take off the sunglasses when dealing with the peacable public. It's just common courtesy. The tightly tailored shirts are just absurd.

I generally stay out of these things and started a reply three times and deleted it! I have to admit SnakeEyes that my first reaction was to tell you to lighten up too but after your last post, I would commend you. It takes a big man to admit being wrong about something (or anything). I agree with you to a point and would suggest that everyone would in terms of preserving individual rights. But presentation is everything!! I used to find it annoying at first when I would read these stupid arguements on the board, now I just stay out (for the most part) and pitty those who have nothing better to do than use the board as a forum to argue and slam each other. It shows more character (I think) to agree to disagree than to throw insults!
As to the police, I know that there are lots of "heros" out there as every cop on this board has already admitted to but that doesn't mean they're all bad. I confess to having a bit of that "they're after me" attitude until my neighbor moved in. He's a cop and one of the most sensible, down to earth people you could meet. He started as a neighbor and became a friend! In terms of the intimidation factor; have you stopped to look at society lately?!? It's gone to hell and most (NOT ALL) youth have no respect for the law anymore. I'm not a cop but if I had to face the freaks and weirdos they face on a daily basis; I'd want as much intimidation as possible behind me as well!
Just my plug for cops and now I'll take my leave of this discussion

Take Care
Brian
