I swapped in a 14 bolt from a CUCV with a Detroit in it. When I accelerate the truck seems to twist or shift to one side, then the other way when I decelerate. All u-bolts and other bolts are tight. It didn't do this with the welded rear. Any ideas?

normal with a detroit, as it locks and unlocks...

it's a strange feeling i know.......

also,,,,,make sure your tires are evenly inflated.......:waytogo:

another thing,,,,,if you are kind of stepping hard on the the accelerator while making a turn.....it will bang in and lock half way through the turn....
most of the time it will bark the unloaded tire...

you'll get used to it.....just be careful on slippery surfaces....always be ready for it to lock in ....

Thanks, I knew about the banging and popping, had read that, but not the "twisting". It's a little weird at 70mph with cookie cutter bias ply tires. :woot:

That's called "locker steer". You can imagine what that is like with a manual tranny as you bang through the gears. Perfectly normal and typical of a Detroit.

The good part is you get used to the little bit of steering when shifting and before long you don't even think about it at all.

The first big bang you get is memorable too. There was one particular intersection I'd go through where it happened most. I'm guessing for whatever reason the Detroit would unlock as I was coming to a stop, the light would go green and as I let the clutch out to get going I'd get this huge bang, and it'd feel like the whole back of the truck shook. I honestly thought my tranny fell out the first time it happened to me.

I haven't gotten it to pop yet, and I've tried to make do it. I got on it pretty good in a turn, but no pop.

First good bang I gotta outta mine was going around a corner, banged loud enough and steered me to the side enough that I thought somebody had rammed me in the rear quarter!!! :eek1:
