I really want to weld my stainless steel universal joint thats on my XJ shaft. I don't like the idea of set screws and have already noticed its loose :(

Can I weld it to the steel XJ shaft with my gas MIG running regular wire?

Thanks

You can,but you really should be using stainless wire, with tri-mix to do it right

I would lock title your set screws and weld the shaft, for that application ,your regular wire should be fine

Another good practice would be to dimple the shaft where the set screws set

As far as I understand, the only problem doing this is that the welds will rust. I welded my SS header flanges to mild steel exhaust tubing with MIG without issue.

Caveat: that's not a life or death/high stress weld either.

For that little bit of welding you dont need the perfect wire. ive been welding stainless nuts on the inside of the frame and its fine.

Sorry dude, I am CWI, I can't help it.....
It is a safety item. Your welding nuts...

309 wire with trimix is the proper poor way of doing it, 310 if you got money. And MIGing stainless is a different experience than mild, but nothing that can't be learned.

You dont need to use the tri mix to "do it properly". Using 309 wire with 75/25 is perfectly acceptable in a situation where it not rusting is not important. The tri-mix does nothing but keep the weld pure to stop it from rusting.

I weld stainless all the time. Stomis is right, you don't have to have tri-mix.
For what you're doing... have at it.

I figured, at most all I'm trying to do is fill in the "loose" area between the shaft and joint. Weld along the two apposing flat sides, up against the stainless to help hold it in place. It seems to have held for a while and recently went sloppy. No bueno. After it's welded, I'll probably end up painting over the joint, not a big fan of the shiny joint, or painting just to cover the weld.

I weld industrial pipe in paper mills and gas refineries for a living every time we weld carbon to stainless we use 309 wire it flows and ties into each metal really good
